The 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees: Asia’s Modern-Day Heroes

The 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees: Asia’s Modern-Day Heroes It is safe to say that most of us, especially those who spent most of their growing up years in the city, know how to appreciate the beauty and wonders of nature. The hillside breeze, the pristine beach or the mountain view serve as our refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life. However, only a few of us can claim that the beauty and wonders of nature have inspired us to take up a cause for the benefit of future generations unlike Antonio Oposa, Jr.

Oposa spent his teenage years in his grandfather’s seaside farm, relishing in the splendor of Bantayan Island in Cebu. It was here where he grew the passion to preserve the environment. Thus it is no surprise that the environment will turn out to be the center of Antonio’s professional life.

Forever Youthful - Aurora Salve, Movie actress-turned- health care professional

In the early 70’s, the devoted fans of the love team of Guy and Pip (Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III) became enraged when Sampaguita Pictures came out with a movie, With These Hands, which starred Pip with a beautiful new actress, Aurora Salve.

National Heroes Day: A reminder of valor and heroism for today’s times

The amazingly large number of people who mourned the death of former President Corazon C. Aquino last Aug. 1 and braved the rains and whatnot to wait for her funeral cortege to pass by from Manila Cathedral in Manila to her final resting place at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City last Aug. 5 proves how much Filipinos value and respect her for the great things she did for our nation.

To Filipinos everywhere, she will be forever etched in our hearts as an icon of democracy—a simple housewife who knew she was meant for a much grander destiny after the assasination on Aug. 21, 1983 of her husband, the late Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino. Ninoy, on the other hand, earned the country’s respect and admiration for speaking bravely against the injustices brought upon by the Marcos dictatorship in the 1970s and it was Cory who continued his legacy. Both Ninoy and Cory have been dubbed as modern-day heroes, and they will no doubt serve as an inspiration to all in the years to come.
