NEW YORK—The Philippine Consulate General of New York honored Reynaldo Gamboa Alejandro with the Dakilang Pilipino Award early this year, an award that places him in quite exclusive company, yet again.
With more than 40 years of experience and 40 books along the way, Mr. Alejandro sets the standard for which many arts and culture writers in America aspire to emulate. Legends such as Ronnie (what his friends like to call him) are defined by their strive for excellence and high regard for their craft and aesthetic. Mr. Alejandro’s talent is evidenced by the launch of his three most recent books: Authentic Recipes of the Philippines, Manila Bay Crossroads of Asia, and Fiesta! Fiesta! Festival Foods of the Philippines. Mr. Alejandro’s relentless passion for his work exudes the professionalism, novelty, and expertise that many people have come to expect from him.
Joined by friends, family, and adoring fans alike, Mr. Alejandro is still the quiet yet energetic humble man, seemingly reluctant to be at the center of distinction and gratitude. Through just a simple and short speech, it’s no surprise how he got here in the first place.
Brilliance at work is never fully content or finished working. This holds true for Mr. Alejandro, who conveyed this with one short sentence. "Here are my newest books, more to follow. Thank you." He quickly got off the stage and the award ceremony was concluded, but the evening was just the beginning for the remarkable author. He began signing books, graciously personalizing each with first name dedications and profound little notes, even at times signing more than 10 books for one fan.
Mr. Alejandro’s impressive written collection of books chronicling the Philippines is just a snippet of his amazing lifetime achievements. His dear friend, Ms. Vivian Talambiras-Cruz describes it best, "The City (New York) became the stage in which his prolific artistry and skills unfolded and grew. While uncovering a vast wealth of international culture, he performed, lectured, and wrote about the arts and cultures of the Philippines, which helped place our country on the world map…and at the rate he is going, and with God’s blessings, there’s no telling what new things he will be contributing in the decades to come."
