G Tongi: A Balikbayan's story

G Tongi: A Balikbayan's story

TWELVE years ago, Giselle ‘G’ Tongi-Walters, was at the pinnacle of her career when she left for the United States.  Now, with a college diploma on one hand and a wider perspective on the other, Giselle made it seem like she never left the country at all with the projects she immediately immersed herself into the moment she came back in the Philippines with her family.

Fresh from graduation, G Tongi came back to the country last January acting alongside American Idol Season 7 finalist, David Archuleta, in the recently concluded soap of TV5, Nandito Ako. In the said soap, Giselle played a mother role for the first time—a role that she took pleasure from being mom of two kids in real life.

Elmo Magalona’s surprise-filled life

ELMO Magalona—the 17-year-old singer and actor who is following the footsteps of his late father, Filipino music icon Francis Magalona—lives a life full of surprises.

“I like surprises,” exclaimed the young Magalona who has been chosen as the face of snack brand Oishi’s newest campaign, “O Wow!”. He was presented to the media on April 18 at Chef Jessie restaurant in Rockwell Center, Makati City.

Corporate greed and our gov’t entitlement programs are destroying America’s economic fiber (Part 1 of 3)

“ARE you better off now than 20-40 years ago?”  If you ask a 50-year-old or older, conservative person, you will probably hear the answer “NO.”  This issue has been a very hot topic in this country these past several years, especially during this election year.  Americans continue to grapple with severe economic and financial challenges brought about by the housing and mortgage crisis that caused unprecedented, mortgage delinquencies, foreclosures and prolonged high unemployment.  Living in this country myself for almost 40 years, I tend to agree that life in the United States, except those “one percent” who are still making tons of money despite the nation’s recessionary economy, has been more challenging than what we had one or two generations ago.

Nora and Vilma as candidates for Nat’l artists

Nora and Vilma as candidates for Nat’l artists

If there’s one thing that defines each era of Philippine show business, it has to be the rivalries between the top actresses of each generation. It began in the ‘50s with Gloria Romero and the late Nida Blanca, followed by the closely contested feud between Susan Roces and Amalia Fuentes in the ‘60s. “Fan-demonium” reigned in the ‘70s and early ‘80s as Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos were pitted against each other; before sweet versus “taray” took over with Sharon Cuneta and Maricel Soriano.

From just two, the rivalries became a free-for-all in the ‘90s with names like Judy Ann Santos, Claudine Barretto, Vina Morales and Angelu de Leon; and even more disputable in the 2000s with Bea Alonzo, Angel Locsin, Marian Rivera, Anne Curtis and Sarah Geronimo leading the younger stars.

“Kung tayo ay matanda na

Sana’y di tayo magbago

Kailan man, nasaan ma’y

Ito ang pangarap ko . . . ?”

—Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko

These verses from one of Sharon Cuneta’s most memorable songs will now aptly serve as the theme song of her new talk show Sharon: Kasama mo, Kapatid, which premieres May 7 on TV5.
