Charice Pempengco and David FosterDAVID Foster is the quintessential music man, and for the past couple of decades, he has lent his talent in making sure that fresh, young talents are given the opportunity to shine.

He is widely credited for the immense success of Celine Dion, and now, a lot of people are curious to see who the latest anointed one is.

It is none other than Charice.

"I have felt for the last five years that the next big artist was gonna be Asian. You know the Asian — this is kind of silly to try and lump the whole Asian population in one category—but years ago in Japan, the Japanese were very good at copying and the Filipino people had been very good at imitating American singers and all that," Foster told the Asian Journal during a break at the rehearsal for Oprah’s presidential inauguration special in Washington, DC early this year.

The prolific songwriter-producer knew that the young Filipino singer had more than just the vocal chops to wow the audience.

"We’re in a new generation where these tremendous singers are coming forth, and on the top of this list is Charice and she’s not a copier, she has her own style, her own thing and I really believe that Charice is going to be the next big international star," he said unabashedly.

Foster is seeing similarities with between Celine and Charice, especially with the way he found out about both singers’ belting prowess.

"I feel the same way about her as when I first found Celine 20 years ago singing in Canada. There’s a billion and a half Asians, it makes sense that somebody from there would come and show us the way," he said.

Foster went on with the similarities, particularly when Celine began her career singing Gloria Gaynor disco songs. Back then, she didn’t have any of her own songs so she was essentially copying too, according to Foster. There was something different in her voice, something distinct that he knew was going to be a big hit someday.

Now Charice is on the verge of breaking the barrier when it comes to Asian singing talents.
