Rex in the city (of Glendale)

When it comes to outstanding Filipino stand-up comedians, the name that most often comes to mind, especially for Filipino Americans, is Rex Navarrete. Since 2002, Rex has been the most celebrated Filipino stand-up comic to perform to multiple sold-out shows in Manila, Hong Kong and Singapore. The world-class comedian has performed alongside notable national headliners like George Lopez, DL Hughley, and Paul Mooney.

This coming Sept. 12, Rex joins other Filipino comedians to perform to an expected sold-out crowd at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. Aside from Rex Navarrete, The Pinoy All-stars Of Comedy will also feature Ron Josol, Joey Guila and Jo Awayan.

There’s even an emerging therapeutic field known as humor therapy, which uses humor to help people heal more quickly, among other things.

In the midst of the recession, foreclosures and lay-offs, Filipino Americans are invited to a night of good belly laughs, fun and exciting entertainment on Sept 12 at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. Set to entertain the audience with their outstanding and distinctive brands of comedy are Joey Guila, Ron Josol and Jo Awayan, who will join Rex Navarrete in the Pinoy All-Stars of Comedy.

Citizen Pinoy: 100 episodes and still going strongAnd he has every reason to be. Immigration law usually leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths. It’s complicated and difficult and good intentions don’t automatically return good results. The show Citizen Pinoy, which airs on TFC is watched widely by Filipinos for the free immigration advice it offers. From tourist visas to obscure paragraph 5 section D technicalities, Gurfinkel has and probably will talk about it. The show is a “service,” he insisted in between camera breaks. Sitting there amongst a crowd of fellow migrants desperately seeking answers that could explain the why, what and how of getting to the United States, I couldn’t help but agree more.
