From any standpoint, it’s easy to see why Ruffa Gutierrez is the star that she is--the life of every party.

This much was evident at her Hollywood birthday bash/fashion soiree last June 28 at the CBS Studios Center--New York Street.

Her statuesque presence, the glowing skin, the infectious laugh, the edifying good-girl manners, her gumption to be herself even with many people watching, and, not to mention, her acute proneness to be the controversial topic of every other showbiz conversation.

ALMOST 27 years ago, a group of second-generation Filipino students joined together around a common goal—to learn their culture. Looking for a role model and teacher, their paths crossed with Helen Pastor-Moreno, who was then a young teacher from the Philippines searching for students who shared her passion for the Filipino culture and the desire to promote and preserve these through dance. Imbued with a deep sense of nationalism and a passion for her art Helen brought these gifts and values to the Filipino community of San Jose. She took in the young students and founded Kaisahan—or in Filipino, oneness or unity. Since then, the group continues to promote and preserve Filipino art and culture through the development, perfomance and presentation of traditional and authentic Filipino dances.

Going back to Manila from a concert in San Francisco, Heart Evangelista passed by Los Angeles a few days ago to spend some time with family. She agreed to an exclusive interview with Asian Journal in Barrio Fiesta in Eagle Rock, which is owned by her family.

The 24-year old heartthrob was born Love Marie Payawal Ongpauco on February 14, 1985. Better known by her screen name Heart Evangelista, the beautiful actress, host, singer, and VJ, was actually raised in California.
"I grew up in Foster City, near San Francisco. When I was ten years old, our family moved back to the Philippines," revealed Heart, the youngest in her family, with one brother and four sisters. She studied in Colegio San Agustin-Makati in Makati City.

“Popsy” Manuel Leelin - Mr. Cool, Father of Goldilocks in Southern California

For over four decades, Goldilocks Bakeshop has established itself as the undisputed leader in the Philippine bakeshop industry. It has succeeded in creating a world-class brand that every Filipino can be proud of. From its first branch in Pasong Tamo, Makati City, in 1966, Goldilocks has grown to be among the largest bakeries in the world. Outside of the Philippines, the biggest operation is in Southern California, which was started by Manuel Tancioco Leelin, whose two sisters Milagros Leelin Yee and Clarita Leelin Go, founded Goldilocks.

Known to the Goldilocks family as "Popsy", Manuel has been on top of the SC operations until his retirement a few years ago. He was born on Dec. 23, 1929 in Nato,Camarines Sur. The Chinese-Filipino Bicolano took up Accounting in the University of the East where he was also the ROTC Corps Commander. That’s also where he met his wife, Maria Teresa Magbanua Lee, his corps sponsor. They married on his 22nd birthday, on Dec. 23, 1951.

The differences of their own upbringing – in a traditional environment and way of life in the Philippines – compared to that of UScultural ideologies have some Filipino dads pulling their hair off while other Pinoy fathers embrace the differences in child parenting.
