Albert always shares this story with friends when the topic turns to job interviews. Applying as a copywriter in the top Filipino advertising agency in Makati, Albert’s application stood out from among hundreds of applicants. How? In the space where he was supposed to paste his picture, Albert drew a funny face of a smiling rabbit. And his covering letter was in the form of a very creative poem.

Another job seeker, this time in LA, for a production assistant position, created a resume complete with flash animation and musical score.

Examples like these show one of the basic qualities needed to nail a job, especially during times like this when there are so many unemployed and very few employers looking for new workers.

1. Creativity.

You have to stand out from the crowd if you want to land that job. Since job seekers are only given a short window of opportunity to make a lasting impression on potential employers, they need to be original and use creative approaches to be remembered.

So, whether you’re preparing for the unwelcome prospect of losing a job, have recently been laid off, or just fresh out of school, think outside of the box. Think up of innovative and novel ways make a lasting impression.

2. Commitment and Perseverance.

When my brother lost his job in the past, something he told me got stuck in my mind. "I have a new job now, and that is to look for another job. So, everyday, I dress up to go to work for eight hours, looking for another job. I dress up well and I do my best," he said. And sure enough, after several weeks, he successfully got a great job.

It takes commitment and perseverance to do this but you will surely increase your chances of landing that job if you commit to applying to a minimum number of jobs per day. Call employers to inquire about what opportunities they have or may have down the road. Send thank you notes to every employer that takes the time to call, write, or interview you. And just persevere. You never know when your day comes.

3. Can-Do Spirit

Optimistic and positive-thinking people are always welcome people in any company. So, always look at the bright side with a can-do spirit. Sell yourself well and make your prospective employers believe that they will surely miss out if they don’t get you. You may experience rejection but if you never get to a place where you might be rejected, you’ll never get to a place you might be offered a job.
