Dress by Oliver TolentinoOF FASHION, SENSE, and SENSIBILITY

Since the late 1990s, Los Angeles Fashion Week celebrates the very best of California fashion. It takes place each March (for fall collections) and October (for spring collections). Celebrated designers present their collections to fashion journalists, photographers, celebrities, merchandisers, stylists, designers and marketplace experts.

In the recently concluded LA Fashion Week, a smash hit was the collection of Filipino fashion genius, Oliver Tolentino, who recently opened his shop in Melrose Ave, West Hollywood. Dubbed by many as the next Valentino, Tolentino stood out among the dozens of designers who presented their collections last Oct 15 at the Geffen Contemporary. Fashion critics were all awed and overwhelmed by Oliver’s much-acclaimed fashion collection. Here are just some of the many positive reviews of known fashion journalists.

"One of my biggest complaints about LA fashion week is that, while there are so many shows and so many up and coming designers, most lack that New York runway quality. It’s about style, silhouette, color, quality, future vision, and just something extra that makes it ground braking. And of all the shows, for me, Oliver Tolentino comes closest to this ideal. At the Downtown Los Angeles Fashion week, Oliver Tolentino sent his Spring 2010 down the runway to everyone’s excitement. With a story telling first model entrance, look one gave us drama, culture, femininity, and luxury all rolled into one.

There is character in Oliver Tolentino’s collection and definitely his Filipino cultural influence (which I thought was elegantly done) and it starts with his usage of fine fabrications. Silk chiffons, Silk Organza, Dupioni Silk, tulle and a fabric called Piña, which is made from Pineapple. Then moving to color with saturated turquoises, peaches, limes, pinks, mints, ivories and in gowns moving to teals, ombres, purples, reds blacks and wedding whites. This kaleidoscope of color, is like candy for the eyes. Plus this was the first show I have seen this whole season with a color palette that has such spring vibrance to it. So that in itself shows to me there is real thought behind this Spring 2010 collection."

"The silhouettes and detailing were extraordinary. The all over, but not over done, beadwork, rosettes details, and swarovski crystaling all made each look pop. And on silhouettes like belted short sleeve jackets, pleated dresses, ruffled skirts and structured bodices and even a pair of taffeta harem shorts. Refinely styled and all sophisticated. One of my favorite looks had tiers of shaggy threads, but offset by a bow front, structured, exaggerated shoulder blouse. An interesting but surprisingly elegant contrast.

"So much incredible rouching, pinching, pleating and draping! And this was all before Oliver sent down gorgeous gown after gorgeous gown down the runway. Dramatic, elegant, exquisite are just a few of the many words I can think of when I re-look through his gown collection. With more crystals, tiers, pleats, ruffles and bead work. All were just oozing drama and femininity and never over done.Forty looks in all and every single look was more beautiful than the next. Brava! Oliver Tolentino! From your Editor-in-Chic.... I’ll see you on the runways!" (Laurie Brucker, Women’s Style Examiner)
