Asian Journal MDWK Magazine’s finest:
1. Charice
After being hailed as Asian Journal MDWK Magazine’s top MDWK cover story in 2009, Charice remains as our number one choice for 2010.
We’ve closely watched this rare gem—the tiny girl with an unbelievable voice—metamorphose from a shy, struggling 15-year-old with humble beginnings in Laguna, Philippines, participating in every singing competition to help make ends meet for single mom Raquel and younger brother Karl—to a bright, perky and confident young woman who continues to rake in admiration, not only from her fellow kababayans, but from bigwig celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Ellen Degeneres, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban and David Foster, as well as the entire world.
After she was discovered in the Internet through YouTube, Charice hit the jackpot and made appearances in Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey’s TV shows. And the rest, as they say, is history.
She has also exhibited her singing prowess on several American occasions—two US presidential pre-inaugural events in Washington DC, two post-Oscar award events, in front of 57,000 baseball fans during the Los Angeles Dodgers 52nd season home opener and most recently, at the lighting of America’s famous tree at the Rockefeller Center in Manhattan.
The legendary David Foster has taken her under his wing and she’s good friends with Oprah which she calls “an honor.” “I always get to hug her—that’s my favorite! I have learned to have her same attitude and to never stop dreaming,” said the ecstatic Charice.
Oprah has dubbed the singing sensation as the “Most Talented Girl in the World.”
Now 18, Charice has already achieved so much at such a tender age.
This year, her crowning glory includes the Billboard chart-topping single, Pyramid, featuring singer/rapper Iyaz and David Foster on keyboards, which recently elevated itself to the number 4 spot in Yahoo’s list of ten songs for the Most Irresistible Lyrics of 2010.
Transitioning to television acting, Charice made her first acting debut on the popular TV hit series Glee as the exchange student, Sunshine Corazon—a fitting name for a Pinay ray of sunshine. She is scheduled to make several more appearances in future episodes.
And it doesn’t end there. According to Mog.com, Charice is currently doing a collaboration with RnB producer and rapper Sean Garrett. Garrett is one of the key figures behind hits as Yeah by Usher and How Do You Sleep by Jesse McCartney. He has also written for the likes of Britney Spears, Fergie and Mario Barrett.
It has also been reported by ABS-CBN that Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas has expressed his willingness to collaborate with the singing sensation, given that they’re kababayans and went through the same rags-to-riches story.
With her increasing popularity and seemingly endless roster of achievements, Charice will, most likely, remain a fixture in our annual top MDWK cover stories list for a looooong, looooong time.
