The country’s “Bad Boy” has grown to be a mature man with nothing but well intended plans for the Philippine cinema, his wife, and his kids.
Robinhood Ferdinand Padilla, popularly known as Robin “Binoe” Padilla, has made a mark in the local entertainment industry not only for doing roles as a heroic outlaw in action movies, but also for successfully bouncing back as a changed man after serving his term behind bars for illegal possession of firearms.
When he was released in 1998, people saw a different Binoe. He showed versatility as an actor by doing different film genres aside from action. He also exuded a cleaner and noble disposition in life having been converted to Islam faith while he was in prison.
Dream as an actor
Binoe’s new serene perspective also made him appreciate life even more and see the bigger picture. As an actor, Binoe always believed in Filipino talent. He, however, expressed sadness for dwindling local film industry despite the pool of talents available. He said that when people from the entertainment industry preferred doing commercials instead of producing a film like Tum: My Pledge of Love—a movie that involved Binoe as a cast, producer, director, and writer, it made him wish for the Philippine cinema to be like the neighboring countries like India, China, and Korea, wherein movies are constantly being made and are supported by their government.
According to Robin, his budding romance then with Mariel Rodriguez, who is now his wife, served as an inspiration for them to come up with a movie like Tum: My Pledge of Love, which was an instant hit since it started showing last April 6.
Aside from it being Binoe and Mariel’s first movie together, perhaps one of the reasons why Tum: My Pledge of Love gained much attention was because of the plot’s similarities with that of Robin and Mariel’s real life situation—with the movie telling the story of how two lovers rise against conflicting hindrances like traditions, faith, and beliefs; and Mariel, a baptized Catholic and Robin, being a converted Islam in real life, surprising the public when they announced that they got married in Taj Majal last August 2010 via a Muslim ceremony.
A husband’s dream wedding for his wife
During the Press conference of Tum: My Pledge of Love last February, Robin shared that he plans to hold another wedding for Mariel this June—this time with the blessings of the Catholic Church and the presence of their family and friends who were not able to witness their sacred union in India.
Although the Catholic church does not approve of the Islamic Law where Muslim men can have many wives, reports say that Robin and Mariel can still be granted of their church wedding if Robin vows that Mariel will be the last woman he will ever love—which he did, many times on national television.
Binoe as a father to his kids. In the same event, Robin took the opportunity to share how he is being fond of his wife’s attention—to the point that it has become surreal for him. He said he wanted to enjoy their life as husband and wife for a couple of years before planning for a baby.
“Besides, Mariel already has kids as a bonus (referring to kids with former partners),” he jested.
Kidding aside, Robin is thankful for Mariel for not trying to replace the mother of his kids, Liezl Sycangco, and wanting to be a friend to his children instead. He also shared that he found it as a relief that Mariel helps him to understand his children—especially his daughters Queenie and Kylie, who are now in their teenage years and have both entered show business.
When asked of his opinion regarding her daughters’ suitors, Robin said that he will make sure that the rules of Islam are followed when someone wants to be with his daughter. The actor, however, said that he wishes nothing but his children’s happiness and will not stand in the way when time comes that latter will find the one “who will make them smile and keep them inspired.”
