Ambitious and always eager to take on new challenges, Ana Karylle Padilla Tatlonghari, makes being a singer, songwriter, actress, commercial model, TV host, athlete, entrepreneur, and a blogger, appear like an easy thing to do by simultaneously doing it all with grace and poise. With all of her accomplishments, one might think that Karylle could not ask for more. For her, however, these are only steps that could lead her to bigger opportunities.
Initially known as the daughter of the country’s Divine Diva, Ms. Zsa Zsa Padilla, Karylle has made a name for herself by showcasing multifaceted talent that is genuinely her own. With an endearing voice and an angelic face that she has obviously inherited from her mom, Karylle takes her career to new heights as she top bills a TV show called the Kitchen Musical, the first-ever pan-Asian television drama series set to launch in the Philippines and 19 other countries this October.
In the Kitchen Musical, Karylle plays the role of Maddie, a graduate from a culinary school in Paris who is set to prove her skills and creativity in the kitchen as a sous-chef before the scrutinizing eyes of the Alex, the executive chef of the restaurant, Avilon. Off for a food boot camp in Singapore, Karylle temporary leaves her shows in the Philippines as a mainstay host in ABS-CBN’s popular daily TV talent program, Showtime, as well as in the Sunday variety show ASAP, to prepare for the musical TV series.
Despite coming from a family of showbiz royalty, Karylle’s road to success was not always served on a silver platter. Like any other talent in the entertainment industry, Karylle also had to go through a series of turn downs on several roles that she auditioned for. She, however, managed to always see the positive side of things and take each rejection as a challenge and opportunity for better things to come her way.
“There have been a lot of roles that I did not get but it hasn’t stopped me from wanting to audition for more things. And finally, I got lucky and I got my biggest break through an audition in Kitchen Musical,” said Karylle during the Philips press conference held last 25 at The Lounge in Tomas Morato, Quezon City.
Perhaps, Karylle’s positive disposition in life is also the reason why she was able to bounce back from her much talked about failed relationship with Kapuso actor, Dingdong Dantes, back in 2008. The young actress came out strong as she refused to be bogged down by all the drama and take the issue as an chance to make big leaps on her career. Since the break-up, Karylle surprised many people when she went from being a Kapuso to a Kapamilya; switched recording companies, as well as talent management; not to mention, posed for a sexy ad-campaign for Bench’s underwear line.
Choosing to learn from experience, Karylle prefers to keep her personal life on a low profile now especially when it comes to her rumored boyfriend, Yael Yuzon, who is the vocalist of the Pinoy rock band, Spongecola. When asked about the status of her love life, Karylle shared the advice of Ms. Susan Roces to her during the presscon of The Kitchen Musical last May 30.
“I think I learned from the whole thing...I’m now taking it from the Queen of Philippine cinema, Ms. Susan Roces, who told me during our Mano Po 2 shooting, ‘Mag-iwan ka para sa sarili mo (Save something for yourself), don’t say everything.”
While there are some things that Karylle can keep to herself, there are some issues that she cannot run away from.
When sought for her opinion regarding the annulment of her mother, ZsaZsa, to Dr. Modesto Tatlonghari, Karylle admitted during an interview that she was relieved but not overjoyed either; for the situation somehow brought her back to her childhood days, when her parents were still undergoing through the annulment process.
“Kasi ending is not really celebrated but it’s a time for healing and it’s something I want other people to know about only because I know there are many kids from broken families out there, so I’m not shy to say na it’s a time for healing,” said she.
Asked for her reaction should her mom decide to finally wed her long time partner, the king of comedy, Dolphy, Karylle left it to the couple to decide considering that they are both “of age.” The former, however, said that she’ll “make sure to cut out all the magazines and make the gown all sexy” for her mom.
When asked if getting married ever crossed her mind, Karylle, who is looking very young for a 30-year-old, said she is not hearing wedding bells just yet. She said in the same interview that she is not in a hurry to get married because “everything happens in God’s time.”
Although she stresses on keeping some things to herself, Karylle said during the press con of The Kitchen Musical that most of the answers that people seek from her are hidden between the lines of her songs in her current album, Roadtrip.
“Nowadays, I’ve written everything down in my music and you can just take it from there...You might be right or you could be wrong, but I think that’s the fun and beauty in that.”
