Fearless in reinventing her fashion style as she grew up in showbiz, multi-awarded singer, actress, youth role model, philanthropist, and entrepreneur; Jolina Magdangal prepares to undergo another metamorphosis as soon-to-be Mrs. Mark Escueta.
Aside from the celebration of her 21st showbiz anniversary last June 5 in the Sunday musical variety show, Party Pilipinas, Jolina had all the reasons to be teary-eyed when her boyfriend, Rivermaya drummer Mark Escueta, came out of the stage and proudly professed his love and joined her in announcing their engagement to the public for the first time.
The couple drove the audience and their co-hosts in suspense and high emotions as Mark started to say: “Sa unang pagkakataon, gusto ko pong ipakilala sa inyo ang akin pong magiging butihing...butihing maybahay. Ang tanging anghel na dumating sa buhay ko. Ang akin pong magiging asawa—si Jolina Magdangal.”
Jolina, 32, was ecstatic to show the engagement ring that her 35-year-old fiance had ordered from a jeweler-friend. In an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Jolina shared that the inside of the ring is engraved with the words: “Ikaw ang buhay ko (You are my life).”
The couple, who both share the love for photography and a laid-back lifestyle, recalled in an exclusive interview with Ricky Lo on Philippine Star’s Funfare Update section how the night of May 21 changed their lives.
At a park in Tahanan Village, Parañaque City, Mark took Jolina on what seemed like a normal picnic date under the moon. He said his girlfriend was clueless on his planned proposal because they usually “have picnics and take pictures at the park.” He then told Jolina he had a surprise for her and presented the scrapbook filled with photos during the early days of their relationship. The last three pages, however, was left blank.
“Jolina was surprised when she got to the last three pages. On the first two pages, I wrote my messages to her and on the third page may picture ng kamay ko na hawak ko ‘yung ring. Then, I closed the scrapbook and underneath it, I had on my hand the ring. By this time, we were already crying. I knelt down and said, ‘Mahal, will you marry me?’”
Jolina was so ecstatic that she said “Yes” to Mark right away. She also shared that she found the moment to be a “happy and romantic” experience as they “finished crying and started hugging.”
In a separate interview, Mark was dreamy when he described how he knew Jolina was “the one,” after knowing the latter for more than a couple of years. Acknowledging the fact that he and Jolina have gone through different relationships in the past, Mark insisted that he knew Jolina was the girl for him because he never felt such strong feelings for anyone before.
“Kahit yung mga kaibigan ko, tinatanong ako, sinasabi ko na first time ako na ma-inlove na ganito.”
Jolina agreed with Mark and said, “Kasi minsan, sinasabi mo sa sarili mo, alam mo siya na. Pero, ikaw, lang ang nakakaalam ng totoo.”
Mark also said that he asked for the blessing of Jolina’s parents, Jun and Paullete Magdangal, and showed them the ring. He also shared that the Magdangals were surprised and at the same time happy for the both of them.
Likewise, Mark’s parents, Mr. Eduardo U. Escueta, vice chairman and commissioner of National Police Commission, and his mother, Mrs. Rockey Escueta, were pleased with his decision too. In fact, it was his sister and his mom, who accompanied him to get the ring.
Albeit still thinking about their wedding date, Mark and Jolina are currently thinking of what the theme of the wedding will be. Jolina shared her dreams of having an Italian wedding just like in the movie Letters to Juliet, where there are “long table, lanterns, and grapes.”
As an actress who has portrayed different roles in the past, Jolina still found the whole experience of the proposal and announcing it to the world as something out of a movie.
“Akala ko mararanasan ko lang ‘to tapos may sisigaw ng ‘cut’ o kaya ng ‘game 5,4,3,2..,’ pero ito totoo na. Saka itong singsing na ‘to, hindi na siya accessories diba? So sobrang saya.” said she.
Asked if she have plans on quitting showbiz after the wedding, Jolina said that only their priorities will change and she does not have plans to turn her back on showbiz just yet.
