Enchong and Erich redefine the modern Pinoy love team

E-mail Print

While most popular  Pinoy love teams are drifting apart these days, the tandem of Enchong Dee and Erich Gonzales  has stood the test of time—by proving they haven’t lost their chemistry despite being paired to other stars of their generation.

Ever since their first team-up in the afternoon telenovela, Katorse, and an independent film Paano ko Sasabihin in 2009; the tandem of Enchong and Erich touched the hearts of young Pinoy girls. Their success as an item also paved way for a lot of opportunities in 2010 such as the drama series, Tanging Yaman, Magkaribal, and their debut movie under Star Cinema, I do.

Given all their successful projects,  Erich and Enchong practically grew up together as on-screen partners. But when Erich was paired to Coco Martin in the docu-film, Noy in 2010, and Enchong was linked to other  actresses like Bea Alonzo and Kim Chui, fans feared that the love team of Erich and Enchong will come to an end.

In the Philippines where budding young actors are paired up and promoted as a love team, fans would usually presume that the love teams they admire are lovers in real life, or headed in that direction at the very least.  Actors on the other hand,  elude questions about the current status of their relationship with their on-screen partners because they are afraid to disappoint fans. The contrary ironically worked for the tandem of Enchong and Erich, who continue to draw in a growing number of supporters by being honest about their relationship—which, according to them, is platonic as of the moment.

“Napag-usapan na namin ito na kahit anong mangyari, trabaho lang muna talaga,” affirmed Enchong during the press conference of Maria la del Barrio. The actor also said that it will be hard if personal feelings are involved in their work because it shows in the camera if they are having personal problems. Agreeing with her onscreen partner, Erich said that she and Enchong “made a promise to not fall in-love with each other” and keep things professional while they are at their prime.

Still open to possibilities, Erich said during an interview with Kris Aquino on her talkshow, Kris TV, last August 2, that she prefers non-showbiz men who are achievers from a different field. Enchong, on the other hand, said that he usually cuts to the chase and goes straightforward to tell that he likes a girl.

The on-screen partners, however, clarified that they are also not closing their doors of being in a real romantic relationship with each other in the future.

“Hindi kasi sinabi namin na it’s hard to say it now. Kasi malay mo sabihin namin ‘hindi, hindi talaga, hindi maari,’ tapos after a year makikita mo kami na. ‘Di ba parang ang pangit naman pakinggan (dahil) dati sinabi (na hindi),” Enchong added.

One cannot really blame these actors for focusing on their careers first because they still have a lot to prove to themselves given their youth and blossoming career.

Erich, who is turning 21 years old on September 20, divulged in an interview with Kris that she is expecting to graduate soon at the Trinity University of Asia with a Major in Mass Communications. Knowing how hard it is to juggle a showbiz career and studies, Kris was amazed at how the young actress managed to still attend school despite a hectic schedule. The talk show host could not help but let out a “wow” when Erich further shared that she already invested on a couple of houses; one for her and another for her family.

Turning a year older than Erich on November 5 is champion swimmer-turned-heartthrob Enchong, who also shared that although he prefers to live with his family, he is able to save up a lot for himself because of the numerous TV and commercials projects he did.

Enchong is happy that his next project will be with Erich again. Fans are are also raving to see the young love team on-screen, doing more“sensual” scenes. The demand of a more mature scene is  to give justice to the original Maria la del Barrio which was considered as one of the most prized telenovelas in Mexico top billed by the famous singer-actress, Thalia, and actor Fernando Colunga.

Maria la del Barrio director, Rory B. Quintos, is all confident as he said in a recent interview with the Philippine Entertainment Portal that Enchong and Erich’s “great chemistry,” would really make them big stars of their generation.
