German "Kuya Germs" Moreno: A showman at heart

E-mail Print

His brightly-colored suits are as vibrant as his soul.  Perhaps that is one thing that all those who knew German Moreno could agree upon.

For someone who started out as a janitor and a telonero (curtain raiser), Kuya Germs’ remarkable contributions to the Philippine entertainment is incomparable.  With much passion and love for the industry, Kuya Germs was able to break into show business along with big celebrity names like Gloria Romero, Dolphy, and Nida Blanca during the 1960s.

His biggest break was when he began hosting GMA’s 70’s Sunday noon-time variety show, The GMA Supershow, which eventually changed into That’s Entertainment from the 80’s to the early 90’s, and now the late-night show, Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman.

Not only is he known as one of the most formidable pillars in the entertainment industry, German Moreno, widely known as Kuya Germs, is also popular for having a heart that is always willing to help others—especially those young budding actors who are trying to make it in show business.

Having celebrated his birthday earlier this month, the Master Showman said that his birthday wish is to have a healthy body so that he could continue helping young actors in the industry.  He also wishes to continue being a host to his programs, Walang Siesta, heard on DZBB and Walang Tulugan seen on GMA.

“Yun lang naman ang role ni Kuya Germs e, ang tumulong sa mga gustong mag-artista na kinakikitaan ko ng potential, katulad ni Jhake Vargas na sa awa ng Diyos ay maganda ang itinatakbo ng career,” he said.

Jhake Vargas is the newest teen talent of GMA who appears in shows like Party Pilipinas, Pahiram ng Isang Ina, and Tween Hearts.  Jhake is also proof of how selfless Kuya Germs is as a talent manager.  In an interview with Sandra Aguinaldo for Kuya Germs’ biographical documentary in GMA’s I-Witness, Jhake disclosed that Kuya Germs did not only help him with his career as an actor, the Master Showman is also helping his mom battle colon cancer by helping with her medications.  Looking quite perplexed, Jhake shared that Kuya Germs does not take any portion of his talent fee.

“Yung arrangement namin [ni Kuya Germs] sa kita, wala siyang percent eh.  Binibigay niya lahat sa akin.  Wala akong nakikitang ganun na manager na walang percent [sa kita ng artista],” said Jhake, who was able to refurnish their home through his earnings from showbiz.

As a star builder, he was able to help the careers of some of the most respected Filipino celebrities today like the popular love team of Nora Aunor (Guy) and Tirso Cruz III (Pip), Sharon Cuneta, Ruffa Guttierez, Judy Ann Santos, Piolo Pascual, as well as international celebrities like Lea Salonga and Billy Crawford, among many others.

With these certified A-list Pinoy celebrities, one might think:  How does Kuya Germs know if an aspiring actor has what it takes to make it big in the industry?

In the same documentary of I-Witness, Kuya Germs shared that he cultured the ability to feel a “vibration” if an aspiring actor has what it takes to be a successful celebrity.  He said he learned to determine talents from the former manager of Sampaguita pictures, Dr. Jose R. Perez.

With many of his discoveries still seen with thriving careers today, Kuya Germs admitted that there were also those inevitable bumps in the road that tested him.  He shared that he was questioned countless times of his choices of discovery.

“Marami akong batikos na natatanggap, na ‘oh bakit mo kinuha yan?  Eh ang payat payat niyan!’ Eh ayan, Piolo Pascual?  Kung makita mo noong tinanggap ko sa That’s Entertainment, payat na payat si Piolo.”

Like what That’s Entertainment did to many successful young actors today, Kuya Germs hopes to discover more talents through his current show, Master Showman.  Unflinching even with the fact that audience share in a 12midnight time slot can be below the average, Kuya Germs accepted the offer, with nothing but the good intention to carry on with his commitment in helping young stars make ait through the industry.  Thus, saying in the same interview with Sandra Aguinaldo that he is happy because he was able to make others happy, not only as the Master Showman,  but as a friend and a second father to many actors as well.

“I’m proud to say na maligaya ako.  Hindi lang sarili ko (ang maligaya), marami akong taong pinaligaya.”
