They say that “a diamond is forever.” Perhaps, one of the reasons why Maricel Soriano is regarded as the country’s one and only Diamond Star is because her brilliance as an actress never seems to fade no matter how many times she decides to take a hiatus from show business.
A couple of years after the last movie she made with Star Cinema (T2), Maricel, who is Maria Cecilia Dador Soriano in real life, comes back with a movie produced by Regal films entitled Yesterday Today Tomorrow. The movie is also Regal’s entry to the 2011 Metro Manila Film Fest (MMFF) and will also be Maricel’s offering to her fans as she celebrates 40 years of her showbiz career.
Yesterday Today Tomorrow is also a reunion of actors from Maria’s generation as it includes Gabby Concepcion and Yayo Aguila, among other veteran actors. Adding to the already star-studded cast are promising young actors of today like Jericho Rosales, Lovi Poe, Carla Abellana, Eula Caballero, Nadine Samonte, and many more.
Since her new movie with Regal will be considered as her move for a “comeback,” fans could not help but ask where Maricel had gone off to while she taking a breather from showbiz.
Last year, a report from the Philippine Entertainment Portal revealed one of the major reasons why Maria wanted to take a break. According to the article, the actress was devastated when her mother, Mrs. Linda Martinez, passed away in 2009.
A sturdy diamond, Maricel then bravely answered the questions about her mother in an interview last year. Apparently still hurting at that time, the actress admitted she found herself staring blankly at nowhere. She even mentioned how she refused to talk the whole day and relate everything she hears to her mother.
The actress further shared that she had so many questions running through her mind during those days when her family was grieving. Albeit being a person of deep faith, Maricel admitted that it was hard for her to find the strength to see the positive side of the situation. But like a true diamond that came from chunk of coal made under pressure, the Diamond Star refused to be bogged down. She rose above her feelings, held on to her faith, and decided to be optimistic with her two sons, Marron and Sebastien on her side.
“What’s nice during those times was that I was always with my sons. I was always with them and we really had time to bond. During those times when I was away (from showbiz), I was able to talk to my sons and we were able to grieve together. It was beautiful. When they go to school every day, I always assure them that everything will be okay. I even joked around and we were able to laugh it off which we didn’t get to do before,” the actress said in Tagalog.
While she enjoys the feeling of living a low-key life, Maricel was not spared from malicious intrigues. Just recently, Maria aired her side on allegations of physical and verbal abuse raised against her by her two maids. The maids also accused the actress of reaching out for her gun. In report from TV Patrol last October, the Taray Queen of the 80’s stated on her counter-affidavit that she “did not commit any act that would constitute the crimes of grave threats, unjust vexation, slander, oral defamation and physical injuries.” Hearings on the case are currently being held in court.
Meanwhile, during the pictorial for Yesterday Today Tomorrow, Maria shared her learnings from the obstacles she went through with life. A person with a clarity of a diamond, Maricel candidly shared how she welcomed trials that came her way.
“Basta hinarap ko siya nang buong ningning,” she beamed.
Admittedly rough around the edges, the Diamond Star shared that while she may have her shortcomings every now and then, one thing she will never fail to remember is to be true to herself. She said that whenever she makes mistakes, she always makes it a point to learn something from it. She would then like to pass the knowledge of experience to friends so they could avoid doing the same mistakes.
