Red Carpet 2011: A rollercoaster ride for local celebrities

E-mail Print

Year 2011 has been a whirlwind of events for most of our local celebrities. Be it the veterans or the neophytes, everyone had their share in the rollercoaster ride of fame for the past 12 months. Here are the top showbiz news that shocked, entertained, and touched the hearts of Pinoy fans this 2011.

Remarkable comebacks

Along with the recent Metro Manila Film Festival is the news about veteran celebrities making a comeback in the big screen this 2011.  Indeed, this has been a year of reunion for some of the most respected showbiz personalities in the industry as the Diamond Star, Maricel Soriano and hunky Gabby Concepcion relieved their Pepe and Pilar days in Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, Regal Film’s official entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival. Despite  winning Best Actress in the said film fest, however, Maricel reportedly chose not to attend the MMFF awarding because of some alleged last-minute disqualifications set against Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow by the MMFF’s judicial board.

With classic remakes of drama hits trending again in Philippine television, veteran actors once again showcased their talents amid a pool of budding young actors. Former on-screen partners Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta, for example, are set to do a drama series in ABS-CBN called Hihintayin Kita sa Langit.

Meanwhile, Noranians were all excited to see their idol come back to the country last August after 8 years of being in the United States. The Superstar is set to do a mini-series for her home station, TV5, and is also set to do a movie project with Governor E.R. Ejercito.

Shocking break-ups, bitter wars, and love triangles

If there were joyous reunions, 2011 also called for shocking break-ups and bitter wars not only with former lovers but also with their colleagues as well.

Piolo took the crowd of The Buzz last Jan. 30 by surprise when he finally admitted that he and KC Concepcion were officially a couple. But just before the year ended, KC spoke in the same show before Boy Abunda that her romance with the heartthrob was finally over.

Asked if there was a third party involved in their split-up, KC refused to answer the question. Likewise, Piolo have kept mum on the true reason behind their break-up.

In May 2011, Kapuso stars Jennylyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo also called it quits. What started as a petty fight led to a heated argument that Jennylyn later described in an interview with Yes Magazine as something that has been physically and emotionally damaging to her. Months later, Jennylyn found comfort in the arms of Kapamilya actor, Luis Manzano.

Another Kapuso star, Rhian Ramos and Radio disc jockey, Mo Twister ended their supposedly hushed romance last May. As if bitter exchange of words over Twitter and interviews were not enough, things started to go completely haywire when a personal video diary of Mo revealing Rhian’s alleged abortion of their child leaked through the internet. Mo has denied allegations that the he has something to do about the leaked video and said that he surrendered the file to Rhian himself before it got through the internet. Still, Rhian and her management filed a case against Mo. Because of the incident, Rhian is on indefinite leave from showbiz and Mo left for the United States to move on.

This year, love triangles were seen not only in the movies and television but also in the real lives of local celebrities as well. Coming out in the open last February was Sarah Geronimo, who shared her forbidden and short romance with Kapamilya actor Ravier Cruz and how sexy actress Cristine Reyes swiftly entered the picture. The good news was that Sarah has moved on with back-to-back projects with Gerald Anderson; and Ravier and Cristine has been more open with their relationship and are currently doing a drama series together in ABS-CBN.

Another couple who broke up was John Lloyd Cruz and Shaina Magdayao last October. The break-up reportedly started when the couple attended the birthday concert of Shaina’s sister, Vina Morales, in which, Ruffa Guttierez—John Lloyd’s ex—was also present. Shaina allegedly texted Ruffa using John Lloyd’s phone asking Ruffa to leave them alone. The incident of Shaina’s alleged jealousy was believed to be the reason of their break-up. However, recent reports said that John Lloyd and Shaina are in the process of patching things up.

From catfights, we move to fistfights between Matteo Guidicelli and Coco Martin. Jealousy over Maja Salvador was believed to be the cause of the fight, which happened right after the Star Magic ball last September at the Salon de Ning bar at the Manila Peninsula hotel. Matteo is Maja’s boyfriend off screen and Coco was Maja’s leading man in one of ABS-CBN’s primetime drama series.

Happy endings

After reports of nasty break-ups, it is good to know that happy endings are still found by celebrity couples who decided to tie the knot this 2011. John Estrada and Brazilian model Priscilla Meirelles exchanged wedding vows last February in La Union. Unfortunately, the wedding coincided with the controversial feud between Estrada and now estranged friend, Willie Revillame. Following John and Randy Santiago’s decision to accept the offer to host a noontime show in ABS-CBN over the proposal of Willie for the two to transfer to his new home station, TV5, Revillame decided to decline the invitation to John’s wedding.

Meanwhile, Kapuso stars and Party Pilipinas mainstays Jolina Magdangal and Kyla both got married with their long term boyfriends, Mark Escueta and Rich Alvarez, respectively. Jolina and Mark Escueta decided to have two weddings: the first was in Catholic rites with an intimate setting last November 19, and the second was a more extravagant garden wedding last November 21 in Tagaytay City, Cavite. Kyla and Rich, on the other hand, got married in private at Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park, Makati City last November 28.

New moms

After celebrating unions comes babies, and new mom Regine Velazquez- Alcasid could not be happier as she gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Nathaniel James last November 8 through a caesarian operation.

Kristine Hermosa-Sotto also gave birth to her first daughter, Ondrea Bliss, via normal delivery a day after Christmas.

The youngest of the new celebrity moms this year was Andi Eigenmann, who, despite being denied by the alleged father of her baby, Albie Casiño, was still very proud and happy when she delivered baby Adrianna Gabrielle via caesarian operation. Andi’s mother, Jaclyn Jose, insisted that the baby will not undergo any DNA tests nor will they ask help from the Casiño.

Unexpected deaths

With a breath of new life comes the end of another. 2011 also grieved for the tragic car accident that led to the death of young Kapamilya actor, AJ Perez last April. The actor was supposed to be coming home from a festival in Dagupan but wasn’t able to do so when he was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Moncada, Tarlac because of severe concussions on his head. After his burial, AJ’s corneas were donated to two young patients by his mom.

Besides that of AJ, Ramgen Revilla’s murder was probably the most shocking and puzzling death in showbiz to date. The half-brother of Ramon “Bong” Revilla, was shot and stabbed to death by masked men in his own home in Parañaque City last Oct. 29.  His girlfriend, actress Janelle Manahan, survived despite being shot twice by the murderer. Sibling rivalry was believed to be one of the main angles of the murder with Ramgen’s siblings, Ramon Joseph and Ramona suspected to be involved with the plotting of the murder. The crime remains unresolved with too many angles being considered but Manahan has recently recovered and has shown willingness to stand as witness against the suspected Revillas in court.

Stars send out love

Death knows no person, time, or place. Last December 16, tropical storm Sendong (international name Washi) wreaked havoc in Northern Mindanao and left thousands dead and many still missing. In the spirit of bayanihan, local celebrities send out help to the victims by participating personally in the disaster areas, answering telethons, and donating foods and clothes and financial help in any way they can.
