It’s been said time and again that there are no small roles, only small actors. This is probably the adage that comedienne Eugene Domingo went by in her several years in show business. Eugene has had countless appearances in both TV shows and films playing supporting roles.
For some time in the minds of TV and movie audiences who have seen her and laughed at her antics, it seemed that she was set to get the supporting role for life. Most of the time, she has been the "token" best friend, like in last year’s blockbuster Ang Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat (with Ai-Ai delas Alas) and the critically-acclaimed 100 (with Mylene Dizon). However, one thing is for sure: in all of these appearances, even with minimal screen time, Eugene always got noticed. With her perfect comedic timing and delivery, she managed to charm audiences and tickle their funny bones nonstop. Her thespic skills, which she no doubt honed during her stint with Dulaang UP at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, are so illustrious that she has often come close to stealing the thunder of her more well-known co-stars.
Now, Eugene finally gets the chance to have the spotlight. She plays the lead role in the new comedy film Kimmy Dora, produced by Spring Films, a production company put up by award-winning actor Piolo Pascual, director Joyce Bernal (who also megged the film), cinematographer Shayne Santos and talent manager Erickson Raymundo. Kimmy Dora, written by Chris Martinez who also directed and penned 100, is actually Spring Films’ maiden offering, and all four producers share a common admiration for Eugene and believe that it is high time for Eugene to shine in her own film.
In Kimmy Dora, Eugene plays twin sisters Kimmy and Dora, who get involved in a sibling rivalry with their father’s fortune who has fallen sick. The twins’ characters are on the opposite ends of the pole: Kimmy is the ruthless CEO of their family business while Dora is the sweet but naive one, and the greedy Kimmy conceives a plot to have the family fortune all to herself. However, her plans go haywire, resulting to a series of hilarious situations. What makes the film even more interesting is that the twins also compete for the affections of the character played by heartthrob Dingdong Dantes. Other big-name celebrities appear in the movie, although in cameos only, like Eric Santos, Christian Bautista, Vhong Navarro and Paulo Ballesteros.
The film has reaped praises from columnists and film critics alike; some has even dubbed her "The Next Comedy Queen." Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Rina Jimenez David wrote recently,"It was certainly a gamble making a movie that centered on an actress whose box-office clout has yet to be tested. But I believe Uge (Eugene’s nickname) has built up enough familiarity, if not fondness, among Filipino moviegoers." And the film’s star-studded premiere night attended by Piolo Pascual, Regine Velasquez, Mylene Dizon and Miriam Quiambao, further proved the massive support Eugene has from her friends in the industry.
