FOR several years now, only two major players have been involved in the battle of the networks—ABS-CBN and GMA-7. While the two giants were busy duking it out to claim the highest place in the ratings game, another network was silently building its reputation and its own legion of fans through its groundbreaking shows—veering away from the usual fare of the two top contenders.
TV5 was relaunched last month, complete with the new slogan "Para Sa ‘Yo, Kapatid" and a station ID which features its biggest talents such as Paolo Bediones, Ryan Agoncillo, Lucy Torres-Gomez, Ruffa Gutierrez, JC de Vera, Maricel Soriano, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon and the King of Comedy himself, Dolphy.
"We hope that our presence as a relatively new and exciting player will help expand the field for the industry’s growth as a whole," ABC chairman Manny V. Pangilinan remarked during the launch. "We remain committed to the vision of a TV5 that truly serves the best interests of our brothers and sisters, wherever they may be."
He further stated that,"We believe that TV5 is a medium that could serve the global Filipino, as well as their families in every part of the country and the world, with the quality of programs and public service that exemplifies our continuous search for excellence."
With the King of Comedy on board, chances are the quest for excellence will be accomplished. Dolphy’s much-awaited new show, Pidol’s Wonderland, premiered last Sunday, April 4. The show is directed by Eric Quizon and also features Jeffrey Quizon, Vandolph, Jenny Quizon (Vandolph’s wife) and Baby VJ, Dolphy’s granddaughter. Before the show’s premiere, there have been a lot of speculations about his transfer from ABS-CBN to TV5, but Dolphy insists there is not bad blood between him and his former station and that the move to another network is merely part of showbiz.

"Maganda naman ang paalamanan," he shares with Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) in an interview. Now he says at TV5, he is treated like a king.
Another show to watch out for over at the revitalized channel is Paparazzi to premiere on April 11 and will feature Ruffa Guttierez, Cristy Fermin and Dolly Anne Carvajal. Other existing shows like Shall We Dance featuring Lucy Torres-Gomez, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? with Vic Sotto, Talentadong Pinoy with Ryan Agoncillo, and Midnight DJ with Oyo Boy Sotto, have all been refreshed as well so as to further anchor the channel’s journey to gain a much larger viewership, maybe even larger than the two giant networks.
And there is no doubt there is much more to watch out for given the fact that Bediones, who can be safely considered a veteran of TV shows, having hosted several programs while he was a part of GMA-7, is on board the TV5 team which conceptualize shows, at the same time developing talents. Paolo was more than pleased that he was given this opportunity.
"It’s a step up," he says. And yes, the same thing can be said about TV5. It has really stepped up to the game. Kapamilya and Kapuso better watch out. (AJPress)
