Two of GMA Network’s finest talents, broadcast journalist Mike Enriquez, and premiered actor Dingdong Dantes have all reasons to start the year with a smile as they were among the awardees honored as People Asia Magazine’s People of the Year 2010 last Jan. 10 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City.
Established in 2004, People Asia Magazine has been giving recognition to outstanding role models from all walks of life whose achievements have inspired and helped the society.
Enriquez was honored for his unwavering commitment to serve via his radio program, Saksi sa Dobol B; GMA’s flagship newscast, 24 Oras; and the television program, Imbestigador.
Celebrating a decade of steadfast public service, Imbestigador is an investigative program that is fueled by different citizen complaints about any unlawful activities that seeks immediate action. The camera catches all the action that includes the felons being caught in the act.
Enriquez revealed that being a host, especially of Imbestigador, is not an easy task. Aside from libel suits being filed against the show, there were even times that the broadcaster and his family received death threats. On the other hand, Mike has learned to accept that the dangers are all “part of the job.” Security has also been provided by GMA to Mike’s household and family.
Mike’s dedication to his work over the years did not go unnoticed. Aside from being recognized by People Asia, he was also included in Reader’s Digest Top 15 most trusted Filipinos; was recognized as Best Newscaster in the Asian Television Awards; Best Newscaster For Television; and Best Public Affairs Host for Radio in the Golden Dove Awards; Anak TV Seal Award For Child Friendly Television Host; Gandingan Award For Best Investigative Program Host; he was also awarded by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) as the Best Television Host, among many others.
Meanwhile, GMA 7 was also proud to announce through a statement that Dingdong Dantes, aside from being one of the most promising actors of today’s generation, was also recognized by People Asia Magazine “for his selfless advocacy to promote the welfare of the youth through his YES Pinoy Foundation. Founded in August 2009, Dingdong has been a staunch supporter of educating and providing scholarships for young people in order to realize their dreams and ambitions,”
Dantes was also noted for his philanthropic work especially during the time when the Typhoon Ondoy hit the country years ago and the actor, together with a team from the Philippine Marines provided relief operation in Rizal via the Yes Pinoy Foundation. He took part in National Bookstore’s Project Aklat that donated school supplies to the typhoon victims. The actor, according to GMA 7, is currently pursuing a campaign to rebuild typhoon-damaged schools.
Dingdong, who is set to topbill GMA-7’s romantic-comedy series I LOVE You Pare with the Asia’s Songbird, Regine Velazquez, said in an interview with Startalk that being included among the People of the Year awardees is “a great way to end 2010.” He also said that he considers the award as an inspiration to do more meaningful projects in 2011.
Aside from being included among the People of the Year, Dantes, who is also a model and director, earned several awards that attest to him being a flexible individual, and an efficient actor. His other recognitions included: Favorite Television Actor Award in the First Annual Fil-Am Visionary Awards; Best Supporting Actor nomination in 56th FAMAS Awards; Best Drama Actor Winner for Stairway To Heaven in the 24th PMPC Star Awards for TV; and Best Actor nomination for Stairway to Heaven in the 15th Asian Television Awards.
Aside from Mike and Dingdong, other winners of the People of the Year award were Miss Universe fourth runner up, Venus Raj; singer and composer Ryan Cayabyab; Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile; architect Felino Palafox Jr.; Fr. Rocky Evangelista; Philippine Airlines president and chief executive officer Jaime Bautista; Eurocopter Philippines president and CEO Thierry Tea (who mobilized his helicopters to help victims of typhoon Ondoy); and Raisa Laurel, the 23-year old law student who lost both legs in the bar exams blast last September.
Also present in the awarding ceremony were President Benigno Aquino III, and Vice-President Jejomar Binay.
