Barbie Forteza’s steady road to fame

E-mail Print

Far more than her long mane and angelic face, Kapuso star and “tween sensation” Barbie Forteza’s steady rise to fame has got her audience thinking that she may be the next child star with a very long career ahead of her. Born with a natural flair for acting and extraordinary charisma, Barbie continues to prove why she is one of the most sought-after young actresses of today.

Since her television debut as the young Jodi in GMA’s remake of the Koreanovela Stairway to Heaven (2009), Forteza won the hearts of the viewers with her eloquently delivered lines and plausible acting. Side by side with her on-screen love team partner, Josh Dionisio, who plays the role of her childhood sweetheart, Cholo, the two left a big impression on the audience even if it was a cameo role.

Barbie continues to climb the stairs to fame as she was recently recognized by PMPC as Best New Actress for 2010 at such a tender age.

Proving that she’s not too young for show business, Barbie also appeared in GMA’s Dear Friend: My Christmas List, Pilyang Kerubin, First Time, Bantatay, Show Me the Manny, among others. She is also regularly seen in the Sunday noontime variety show, Party Pilipinas.

Aside from television, she also appeared in some films that have been an entry to the Metro Manila Film Fest like Wapakman, Ang Darling Kong Aswang, and Si Agimat At Si Enteng Kabisote.

Together with Josh, Barbie reached a wider audience via the drama anthology and romantic show, Reel Love presents Tween Hearts, which started airing September of 2010.

Albeit a part of a famous love team, Barbie said in an interview with igma.tv that she considers Joshua  only as a close friend, describing him as a “goofy” person, but a “gentleman” in all the right places. She also said that she can only have as far as “crushes” right now and is not rushing into falling in love soon for she still has to focus on her career and studies.

Although she honestly admitted in an interview with igma.tv that it was her long time dream to be famous, 13-year-old Barbie, considers taking up summer classes or enrolling herself on a home-study program to make-up for the times she missed class because of her tapings.

“Ayoko naman po kasing huminto sa pag-aaral ko (I don’t want to quit school). Importante pa rin po sa akin ang education ko kahit po busy na ako sa pag-aartista. (Education is still important to me even if I already have an acting career). “

Driven and ambitious, Barbie also dreams to have her own restaurant someday, or be a hotel manager, or a pastry chef aside from being an actress.

When it comes to being a successful performer, however,  Barbie shared with PEP that she draws inspiration from Marian Rivera, because of the latter’s continuous career growth like having “soap (operas), movies and commercials.”

In the press launch of First Time, last February 2010, Barbie said that she is grateful for the blessings that are coming her way. She also acknowledged her home network, GMA, for entrusting her and love team partner Josh with projects that allows them to show off their different acting skills.

“Sobrang thank you po dahil pinagkatiwalaan ulit kami (We are very thankful that [GMA] entrusted us [with a project] once again... pagbubutihan nalang po namin ang trabaho (we will do our best to fulfill our job),” the actress said.

Due to the insistent demand of her fans that she star in her own show, Barbie was chosen to top bill the latest drama series of GMA titled Nita Negrita, which started airing last month. In Nita Negrita, Barbie plays the role of Filipino-African American Antoinette. Nita Negrita who grew up in an orphanage. This series also aims to shed light on the racial issuesbasing upon the color of one’s skin.  Barbie’s on screen partner Josh is also a part of the cast but unlike their previous projects together, Barbie said in an interview with 24 Oras that the scenes she and Josh have together in Nita Negrita will be purely platonic.

So far, Barbie seems to be on the right track with many projects coming her way from all sides.

Proud of the achievements she has gained so far, Barbie also revealed in an interview with gma.tv that she dreams of more challenging roles in the future like playing “an insane person, tomboy, deaf, or mute.”
