Holy Week is considered as one of the most solemn days in the Philippines. As a predominantly Catholic nation, most malls and businesses shut down from Holy Wednesday until Black Saturday so that the faithful can take some time off from work and reflect in their own ways. Local celebrities are no exception to the rule, with most of them taking the week off to spend more time with their loved ones while they contemplate either at home or on some of the country’s most beautiful places.

Coming home

Take Matteo Guidicelli for example, who said in an interview with TV5’s  Paparazzi that he plans to go home to Cebu this Holy Week and reunite with his family whom he haven’t seen for a long time.

Coming home to Nueva Ecija is Kapatid talk show host Cristy Fermin, and Kapuso star Ryza Cenon, who said that she usually watches the procession and those who are doing penitence for their sins.

Luis Manzano, plans to spend the Holy Week with friends in Batangas, where his mother, Vilma Santos, is the incumbent mayor.

International crooner Christian Bautista, meanwhile, said in an interview that he intends to spend the Holy Week with “ friends and family, then come home to Cavite to remember and thank God for everything he has done.”

Aga Muhlach said that he and his wife Charlene Gonzales-Muhlach and their twins will be at their resting house in Mataas na Kahoy in Batangas, where he will go “wakeboarding for sure.”

Lent rituals

After praying the Stations of the Cross, Karylle said in the same report that she usually sings at a free concert at the Subic Bay Boardwalk.

Singer Jamie Riverasaid that she will spend Good Friday at the Sto. Domingo church for the 7 Last Words, and also “have to be visible and be heard” on Easter Sunday because it is her “calling.”

Like Karylle, doctor to the stars, Vicki Belo plans to do the Stations of the Cross in Manila before heading to Bangkok with partner Hayden Kho.

Hayden Kho on the other hand, plans to “reflect” and “write down things” that he wants to do with his life. “(I want to write down) “things that I’m thankful for,” he shared.

Definitely with family

Kapamilya star Cristine Reyes, meanwhile, said that her family opt to stay at home during Holy Week.

“Sa Holy Week ang mommy ko ayaw niya kaming lumalabas tapos hindi kami kumakain ng karne. Sa bahay lang kami, ‘yon kasi ang nakaugalian namin. Bisita Iglesia at magre-repent,” said she.

TV5 actor Wendell Ramos shared that he plans to take his days off with his children and “go visiting churches. “

Likewise, Enrique Gil also said that he will be with his family and “go to Sto. Niño church,” light candles there, have dinner after, and go to the beach the day after.

Out of town/ Beaches

Actress and Paparazzi host Ruffa Guttierez, meanwhile, said on the show that she

will “ pray and reflect” in her friends farm somewhere out of town. Ruffa also shared that she will be spending time with her two daughters, Lorin and Venice.

Ruffa also divulged that her parents, Annabelle Rama and Eddie Guttierez will be spending Holy Week in Baguio while her brothers are bound for a secluded spot in Boracay Island.

Mula sa Puso star, Lauren Young said in an interview, that she plans to tour her balikbayan brother around the country.

“Baka mag-La Union kami, Baguio, ganyan, all-around,” the actress said.

Kapusostars Michelle Madrigal, Carla Abellana, and Geoff Eigenmann, meanwhile said in iGMA.tv report that they also plan to hit the beach but are still undecided regarding their exact destinations.

Still working

The famous are never strangers to criticisms. Premiere actor-director Cesar Montano disagreed with the allegations that all local celebrities do during the Holy Week is party and have a good time.

In a report from the Manila Bulletin, Montano usually goes to his hometown in Bohol to visit the churches there but due to a hectic schedule he won’t be able to come home for Holy Week this year as he is currently shooting for a new movie in Canton, China.

Other celebrities working abroad this Holy week are the Kapamilya stars like Kim Chui, Gerald Anderson, Angelica Panganiban, Enchong Dee, and many others. They are bound to do a show for Star Magic in New York and other parts of the US.
