Joining SFTPAA
How to join Sinag-tala? "It’s unbelievably easy," said Alforque. "We hold auditions in April for the Theater Ensemble (our touring ensemble) and in July for the Theatrical Revue." Auditions are designed to be inclusive of everyone who is interested in our free training, he explained. "Therefore lack of ability or training, perceived or real is never a factor." This, he says, aims to eliminate all barriers to participation in the arts.
"Everyone must undergo a singing audition which involves nothing more than singing any song of one’s choice. Those who wish to dance or act are required to attend additional auditions," he said. Auditions serve as a means only to evaluate how each person will fit into the program, but does not exclude anyone. Also, adults, especially parents and seniors are given an additional incentive to join by being exempted from auditions just by submitting an application in person. For children, the only requirement is that they must be at least four years old. All ethnicities, racial backgrounds and skill levels are welcome
Activities and performances
The next six months for SFTPAA will be extremely busy with Theatrical Revue auditions on July 10 to 13. The Sinag-tala Theater Ensemble touring calendar includes the Adobo Festival in Stockton on July 25, the California State Fair on August 29, and an exclusive concert hosted by the Music Department of the California State University at Sacramento on October 3.
The SFTPAA will also hold a Filipino Poetry Kapihan on September 12 at the Sacramento Poetry Center in downtown Sacramento, followed by a 20th Anniversary Commemorative Ball on September 26 at the Doubletree Hotel in Sacramento. The Theatrical Revue workshops and rehearsals begin in August and will culminate with three performances on December 4 to 6 at the Luther Burbank High School Auditorium in Sacramento.
The 20th anniversary of the Sinag-tala Theatrical Revue is a huge milestone in Sacramento’s art history. The organization is calling on all Sinag-tala alumni since 1990 to be part of the celebration by contacting the SFTPAA as soon as possible at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
