I COULDN’T believe my eyes when I saw Balitang America reporter Steve Angeles again during a coverage of a Warriors game. It was been a while since we last crossed paths in the events we usually cover in Northern California, so seeing him looking fit made me check him out a couple of times during the press conference. Yes, it was him alright—and he had never looked so good. Having to struggle with my weight in the past 15 years of my life, I was curious how he was able to shed all those pounds and still look healthy. Surely it was not just plain dieting (or starving, as most people mistakenly go for), nor something drastic like going under the knife (lipo, anyone?). So after a few e-mails to each other and short, quick conversations, he let me in on how and why he decided to lose weight.
"I found myself in cholesterol class one day. The doctors said I needed to be healthier," he said. "I knew they were right, but wasn’t sure how to do it until one day me and my friend saw the commercial for P90X."
P90X is a 90-day home fitness challenge made by trainer Tony Horton. It involves 12 intense DVDs that are designed to workout each and every part of your body and does not require a lot of fitness equipment. Steve said his friend saw the commercial for P90X and suggested that he should try to do that. The problem was he said, is that he didn’t have the time.Still, Steve maybe decided that it was time to work up a sweat and go healthy.
"I was a chubby kid growing up, but in high school, it didn’t take much to get healthy," Steve explained and added, "I played football all four years, ran track and wrestled, so even if I was big, I was like ‘football big.’" After high school, he still played semi-pro football, but the discipline was already lacking. He also still ate like he was still in high school. "I tried to get a trainer after college, and it helped me lose 20 pounds, but that got expensive. Eventually I ended up back where I started. In 2007, Steve was tipping the scales at an hefty 230(ish) pounds. He decided that 2009 would be the year to become healthy.Steve started with the 10 Minute Trainer, a program that teaches you how to get a full workout in ten minutes a day. After trying the program, he realized that he can do times three of the workouts. In a couple of months, he worked his way up to the P90X.
However, just like those who are trying to lose weight, Steve face a number of challenges along the way. "Building the discipline to do it consistently," he said. Yes, having a treadmill or gym set at home doesn’t necessarily mean one would get to your goal. Steve further explained, "I had a gym membership, and some weights at home, but wasn’t getting anywhere. The videos gave me structure." In his blogsite, Diary of a Fatman: Slimming Down with Stevie (http://hubpages.com/hub/Diary-of-a-Fatman-Slimming-Down-with-Stevie-P90Xing), Steve chronicled his journey to weight loss through his video and photo postings. His site showed how he used the program to his benefit, as well as how he ate.| < Prev | Next > |
