On Monday, October 27, at a press conference at Max’s Restaurant at Puente Hills Mall to announce a Christmas concert with longtime friend Brian McKnight, Martin kidded that the title "Concert King" was kind of a stretch, especially at these times when he does not seem to attract the bigger crowds that used to populate his shows earlier in his career.
On the plus side, Martin said that younger people are watching his shows now. "The younger generations are coming to learn about the music of their parents," Martin revealed. "We are the most talented people in the world, but nobody knows it," Martin lamented.
On August 9th, I was honored to perform a marriage ceremony for two Asian American friends. It was such a joyful occasion with a 9-course Chinese banquet and a beautiful wedding cake. Arthur and Young are a typical middle-class family. Arthur is a successful filmmaker. Young is a popular ESL teacher. They have an adopted son, Reed, who is 5 years old. Friends and family laughed and cried as Arthur and Young talked about what it’s like being together for 30 years. They remembered the times when they get on each other’s nerves, and most importantly, the times when they knew that no matter how difficult the situation, they could count on one another for unconditional support. LOS ANGELES - The Asian Pacific Health Care Venture, a community non-profit health center located in East Hollywood, conducted its fifth health fair at the Rizal Hall of the Philippine Consulate General Office here recently. The health fair was called “Pagpapahalaga Sa Kalusugan ng Pamilya (Giving Importance to Family’s Health)” and was held in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles.
“It’s a health fair exclusively intended for Filipinos, so that we could reach out to our community and emphasize that prevention is best; it is better than medicine,” said Marilyn Johns, an APHCV outreach worker who established the health fair five years ago. The goal of the free health fair was to reach out to Filipinos that are marginalized and underserved. “Ang mga kababayan natin na walang insurance, yung mga bagong dating at hindi pa nakapaghahanap ng trabaho at walang kakayahan na magpatingin sa doktor,” Johns informed the Asian Journal. (Our Filipino countrymen that do not have medical insurance; those who have just arrived here and have not found jobs yet, and cannot afford to see a doctor).
