BURBANK - Kamay at Puso (KAP), a.k.a. Hand and Heart--an award-winning charity organization--announced today that it is turning to popular social networking sites, Twitter and Facebook, for their latest fundraising campaign which will aid UNICEF’s relief effort in the Philippines following the devastating category Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) that hit the nation’s capital last Sep 28.

Through the use of Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube viral videos, KAP hopes to tap into the potential power in numbers, calling to the millions of Facebook and Twitter subscribers to pledge donations as low as $5 USD.  KAP titles this latest online campaign What Would Abe Do (W.W.A.D.) which urges online members to donate their five-dollar bill on the Oct. 15 Tweet-a-thon. All funds collected that day on the Kamay at Puso Donation Page will go towards UNICEF’s Typhoon Relief Effort.

The organization today released the first of three original viral videos as a vehicle to drive many users to participate in the cause via Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Significant Numbers:

Facebook and Twitter are the most popular online social networking tools today.

• Facebook has 300 million active today

UNICEF Relief Effort

A $5 Donation to UNICEF’s Relief Effort will provide:

• 1 large wool blanket & 1 ten-litre collapsible water container for a child in an emergency situation

• 83 packets of oral rehydration salts to help children combat dehydration

• 5 children a sketch pad and a set of 8 coloring crayons each

UNICEF is addressing the need for safe water in impacted areas. According to the organization, “The lack of safe water is a major health concern and could lead to disease outbreaks in flood-affected areas.” Read more here about their successful relief efforts and how much more needs to be done.

“We believe that many people want to help, but we also know the obstacles in event fundraising that could dissuade potential donors from ultimately giving. The U.S. is experiencing historic economic struggle and a rising unemployment rate. Many are in a difficult spot. However, if many give even a little, the impact could be tremendous.” - Leslie-Anne Huff, CEO Kamay at Puso

“We’ve decided to rely on the popularity of social networking sites to help spread the word, and the donation process as easy as possible to make. Traditional fundraising events take time to organize and attend. Through this online event, we have done away with transportation costs and venue expenses, not to mention the time it takes to show one’s support. Now, the money that could have gone to the gas and parking fees alone could now go directly to those in need.” - Leslie-Anne Huff, CEO Kamay at Puso
