Chinese-American Hanley Chan is one of the candidates vying for a seat in the Broadmoor Police Commission in the coming Nov. 3 elections.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Officer Chan, who now resides in the Broadmoor Protection District, is excited at the prospect of becoming the first Asian and minority to serve on the commission if he gets elected to the post.

Officer Chan says he got his inspiration when President Barack Obama became the first elected African-American United States President.

“When President Obama became US President, he gave hope to other minorities. It got me thinking, too. Since I am qualified for the commissioner post, I told myself I will run for this seat,” says Chan, adding that there has been no Asian or minority representation in the commission’s entire history.

Knowing that 40% of the Broadmoor area residents are Filipinos, he is actively campaigning in the Fil-Am community for votes, and hopes that going house-to-house to discuss his run for the commission with Broadmoor area residents will give him an edge in this race.

Officer Chan, who has patrolled the streets of San Francisco in the last seven years as Patrol Special Officer, has also been involved in many voter registration drives, including a martial arts event (organized by the National Latino Peace Officers Association and where the Fil-Am Democratic Club got involved in the get out and vote drive) and at the Colma pet hospital (organized by the United Methodist Church and Healthy Pet Inc.).

Among the things that Officer Chan wants to deliver if elected to the Broadmoor Police Commission include opening commission meetings to the public in a more accessible and transparent method, implementing a language access program for the growing minority population of Filipinos/Asians and Hispanics (set mandate for police officers that when they encounter a language barrier, they should ask for an interpreter), creating a program for youth with police participation and supervision, and forming a subcommittee made of residents (precinct captains) who give an on-the-ground assessment of what needs should be addressed around neighborhoods.

Chan has the endorsement of many elected officials, including Daly City Vice Mayor Michael Guingona, State Commissioner (Board of Engineers & Land Surveyors) and Daly City Planning Commissioner Ray Satorre, Fel Amistad of the San Mateo Commission on Disability, Alice Bulos of the San Mateo County Commission on the Status of Women, Betty Yee of the State Board of Equalization, State Controller John Chiang, Daly City Councilmember Carol Klatt and BART Board Vice President Hon. James Fang. (Complete list of endorsements can be seen at www.voteforhanleychan.com.)

His community involvement includes membership in many Democratic and socio-civic clubs. Aside from being a Police Officer, Chan is also a Realtor and a member of the National Notary Association.

“I hope to encourage Broadmoor’s residents to vote on Nov. 3, including the many Asian Americans who live in the district,” says Chan. “I am the first Asian and minority to vie for a seat in the commission, and I hope the community will believe in me and inspire me to win a seat in the Broadmoor Police Commission.”
