LOS ANGELES - FilAm Creative, an organization advancing Filipino-Americans in entertainment and media, will be an industry sponsor for Bigfoot Entertainment’s Singafest Asian Film Festival Sept. 29-Oct. 2. Singafest is a new international film festival celebrating Asian cinema premiering at the historic Bigfoot Crest Theater in Westwood Village, Los Angeles.
“We’ve had a very successful 2011 establishing FilAm Creative with events that exceeded our expectations,” said FilAm Creative co-chairman, Ed Mallillin. “Bigfoot has been a great partner this year. They’ve shown an incredible amount of support to FilAm Creative and we’re thankful for an event like this to showcase what Fil-Am filmmakers are capable of. Fil-Ams need to support our own artists more and that starts here at Singafest.”
Three FilAm Creative members will have their films screened during the New Faces/New Frontiers: The Singafest Short Film Program on Sat. October 1st at 11am at the Bigfoot Crest Theater. They are the documentary Lyrical Empire: Hip-hop in Metro Manila by Mark Villegas, Asian-American identity film Spunk by Patrick Epino and the intense horror/thriller D-volution by Walter Boholst. The program is co-sponsored by FilAm Creative and CAPE (Coalition of Asian Pacifics In Entertainment.)
Spunk director, Patrick Epino, is taking a lighthearted approach the festival, “Film festivals are great for the free booze, the female groupie sex and drunken networking parties where you don’t remember anyone you meet. I fully expect Singafest to come through in a big way.”
Along with the Shorts Program, FilAm Creative is making its presence felt the entire weekend by also co-sponsoring the Festival Kickoff Party at The Whisky Blue in The W Hotel in Westwood with LA Weekly on Thurs. Sept. 29, the Industry Happy Hour Mixer on Fri. Sept. 30 at the Napa Valley Grille Rutherford Lounge, and The Girl With No Number after-party at the Napa Valley Grille on Sun. Oct. 2.
Several entertainment industry heavyweights will be judging the festival including Teddy Zee, producer of The Pursuit of Happyness, Hitch; Ted Kim, CEO of CJ Entertainment; Rosa Li, head of production and development, Celestial Pictures; and Kenneth Bi, award-winning writer and director, Kenbiroli Films. Japanese legend, actor Sonny Chiba, who appeared in The Streetfighter and Kill Bill will be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Filipino American martial arts star Ernie Reyes, Jr. on Saturday, October 1st at 8:30pm at the Bigfoot Crest Theater.
The closing night film will be a sneak preview benefit screening of the controversial drama The Girl With No Number directed by Michael Gleissner with proceeds benefiting the non-profit organizations Asian Professional Exchange (APEX) and Center for Pacific Asian Families (CPAF). Producer/Director Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever) is presenting his favorite overlooked Asian movie, Beat Takeshi Kitano’s riotous 1994 comedy Getting Any?.
