LOS ANGELES - The Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), a member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice, welcomes longtime community leader Marvin H. Andrade as its new Leadership Development Director.
In that position, Andrade will provide long-term vision and strategic direction to three leadership program units at APALC: the Leadership Development in Interethnic Relations (LDIR) program, the Parent Organizing Network (PON) and, Youth & Parent Leadership Development (YPLD) program.
Prior to APALC, Andrade spent 12 years at the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) as an immigrant rights advocate, and served in different capacities, including the past four years as CARECEN’s executive director. Andrade is a graduate of the University of Southern California with degrees in Political Science and International Relations.
“Marvin brings years of great experience as the former Executive Director of the Central American Resource Center,” said APALC President and Executive Director Stewart Kwoh. “As Marvin is also an alum of the LDIR training program, we are proud to welcome him ‘home’ to APALC.”
LDIR encourages participants to understand and negotiate the boundaries that separate them from each other, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and class. LDIR currently offers “LDIRs in Health” for those working in the health sector and “LDIRship for Social Change” for Central Valley community leaders.
YPLD develops the leadership skills of immigrant families. The unit works with racially diverse youth in Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley through an in-school class for high school students, as well as through after-school programs.
PON is a collaborative of independent parent organizations in Los Angeles County, which supports parent engagement and develops and implements a common policy agenda to improve educational outcomes especially for students from low to moderate-income communities of color.
