OAK BROOK, Ill. - January 23, 2012 marks the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. In many Asian cultures, the dragon symbolizes power and excellence, boldness and wisdom. McDonald’s commemorates the year with a special calendar that debuts artwork created by Asian American artists. McDonald’s Year of the Dragon calendars will be available for a limited time for McDonald’s Family Pavilion visitors at various Asian festivals while supplies last. McDonald’s wishes everyone a prosperous 2012 filled with great ambition and the strength of the dragon.

“McDonald’s has been a long-time supporter of the Asian American community, embracing its culture and heritage,” says Vivian Chen, Director of Ethnic Marketing, McDonald’s USA. “Through the Year of Dragon calendar project, McDonald’s continues to celebrate achievement through artistic talent while encouraging young artists to bring their imagination to life.”

For four consecutive years, McDonald’s has honored and promoted Asian heritage with the annual calendar. The 2012 edition embodies artwork created by seven Asian American artists. The collection of work represents the versatility of art forms and materials while integrating the traditional characteristics of the dragon with modern aesthetics.

“I’m pleased to be featured in McDonald’s Year of the Dragon calendar,” said BiJian Fan, an Asian American artist and paper sculptor who learned the traditional Chinese paper art from his grandmother. “McDonald’s has offered me an opportunity to celebrate my heritage and express my creativity in a significant way.”

The McDonald’s Family Pavilion captures various Asian art and cultural aspects that speaks to young and adult audience. This spring, the Family Pavilion will travel to five U.S. cities celebrating different Asian festivals with the local community.

In-language brand ambassadors are present at McDonald’s Family Pavilion to meet and greet visitors and provide information on scholarship programs McDonald’s sponsors.
