Two church missions to visit PH

LOS ANGELES – Two mission teams of the Filipino Caucus of the California Pacific Annual Conference CALPAC will go to Mindanao area this February and August respectively. The first mission will rebuild the old Dagumbaan United Methodist Church and the second one is the advocacy group that will address the plights of the poor and minorities in Davao area.

This was learned from the Rev. Paddy Padilla of the La Palma United Methodist Church, the newly installed president of the Filipino Caucus. This is the seventh mission team sent to the Philippines since the inception of the Filipino Caucus in 1972.

Rev. Paddy and other officers of the FC were installed recently by Bishop Mary Ann Swenson of the California Pacific Annual Conference CALPAC. Other officers were: Florence Schuchman, Vice President; Aurora Garcia, Secretary; Aida Banci, Assistant Secretary; Vicky Ignacio, Treasurer; Jape Cadlaon, Auditor; Dennis Manacop, Finance; Rev. Ben Vinluan, Historian-Librarian.

Coordinators are: Rev. Emelito Hernandez, Outreach and Strategies; Rev. Nelson Castorillo, Co-coordinator; Rev. Nestor Gerente, Laiason to the Annual Conference; Youth Ministry Coordinator, (not filled), TJ Serrano, Co-coordinator; Rev. Miguel de Guzman, Resource Person; Rev. Mark Marcos, Mission Team and Clergy Fellowship; and Ding Lapus, Mission Team Co-Coordinator.

An FC Advocacy group was formed and a fund raising were held recently in connection with this mission works to assist local and indigent people in Davao and for victims of typhoon “Sendong.” The medical mission and relief effort to be headed by Atty Bert Mendoza, Joe L. Buktaw and Rev. Roy Padilla is being supported by the Rotary Club, World Medical Relief, FAHWA, and other non-governmental organizations here in Los Angeles and Davao area.

The Filipino Caucus is an organization that serves the needs of the Filipino American Methodists in the California Pacific Annual Conference through missions and programs focusing on church rebuilding, advocacy, empowerment and congregational development.
