UPAAA- University of the Philippines Alumni Association in America held its 15th National convention at JW Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC. The three-day event from Sept 4-6, 2009 was graced by the first woman and 19th President of the University of the Philippines Emerlinda R. Roman. Together with President Emer Roman, the UPAAA President Dr. Francis Sy graciously welcomed the delegates from all over the states and other countries who participated the convention during the Fellowship Night- “Gabi ng Katuwaan at Pabidahan.” Chapter presentations were being performed with much fun and reminiscent of the “UP days.” The UPAA-NY chapter bagged three prizes namely Most Meaningful, Most Rehearsed and Most Entertaining awards with Noel Gamboa, composer of Pinoy linedancing songs and Silver Jubilarian leading the group.
The group consisted UPAA-NY president Dr. Aurora Nazareno-Ocampo, Dr. Menchee Fulgado, UPAA-NY, PRO Imogene Raypon, Jean Nabong and Dori Gamboa. Raw talents have also been displayed by a fabulous rendition of Ramon Acoymo, dean of College of Music. With its standing ovation performance. And, it’s just the beginning of the show. It is always with great pride to listen and imbibe lessons learned from our UP education during the UPAAA Symposium with Dr. Jun Abrajano as moderator. Among the distinguished speakers in their field of specialization were Dr. Jose B. Cruz, Professor of Engineering, College of Engineering, OSU, Dr. Lawrence R. Heaney, Curator, Field Museum and Atty. Loida Nicolas-Lewis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, TLC Beatrice, LLC.
The convention was culminated with a picnic at the park hosted by the local UP Metropolitan D.C. area. Sumptuous food readily available and hospitality greatly appreciated. Florida here we come in 2011!
