The Philippine Heritage Institute International, a private foundation, will celebrate its 20th anniversary on October 31 at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Los Angeles."In the wake of natural disasters affecting our kababayans, we at PHI feel that we have to go on with our tradition of recognizing individuals, who through their careers, personal endeavors and volunteer work have contributed to the enhancement of community life," says Naomi Palma-Armada, PHI founder and executive director.

Mrs. Armada, who hails from Marikina, had a tremendous loss of properties herself. Yet she remains an inspiring and very passionate lady. Madame Naomi, I salute you.

PHI is holding its two events together: "Tribute to Outstanding Filipino American Nurses (on its 11th year) -- a nursing advocacy to insure that Fil-Am nurses keep the niche they have carved in their career path"; and "Profiles in Service, Pillars of Community (on its 3rd year)," -- celebrating the accomplishments of community leaders and advocates for community causes.

Sabocor, President, United Bicolandia Los Angeles; Abraham Lim, Esq. of The Law Offices of Abraham L. Lim APC; United Batanguenos of Southern California, Inc. Governor Eric Villafranca; Leo Maranan, President of the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce, San Fernando Valley; Dr. Norma Salvaterra, President, Cagayanos of the North; Dr. Lorna Posadas Wood, Director, Angels of Hope; Chito Mandap, Founder/Exec. Dir., United Pampanga Leaders Council; Gil Mislang, President of PeDRO; Dr. Serafin D. Cardeno, Public Health Physician Specialist, County of LA, Dept. of Health; Renato L. Calugcugan, DDS, President, Southern California Filipino Dental Society; and Placida Worrell Transfiguraction, past President, Philippine Women’s University Alumni Association of Southern California and also yours truly will be among this honorable group.

The recipient of this year’s most distinguished award goes to Gawad Kalinga, and will be received by its founder, Tony Meloto -- the "builder of dreams," for his encompassing love of humanity, by being his "brother’s keeper" and for "answering the cry of the poor."
