As of this writing, the devastating aftermath of the worst disaster to hit our country continues. Watching the news update, I saw tons of garbage and waste piling up all over our country. The challenge of rebuilding, cleaning and picking up the pieces is overwhelming.

"Pumipila kami para sa isang supot na bigas at tatlong sardinas," just to survive each day, according to my brothers, relatives and friends. And they all say one thing -- why? It feels like God had forsaken them. I could only say that it is not just there in the Philippines, it can happen anywhere at anytime. God gives trials to all of us.Trials that we can overcome by believing and reaffirming our faith.

I was in tears when i saw the hundreds of boxes being filled up Island Pacific,
Seafood City and Goldilocks to name a few. These in turn will be shipped at no cost, sponsored by various cargo shipping companies. Fil-Am kids with their parents are dropping off canned goods, clothes ,food and donations. "Kitang-kita ang pagka matulungin natin sa ating kapwa Pilipino."The unity being demonstrated by the Filipino community around the world -- rich or poor, stars, celebrities, politicians -- is truly amazing, whether in TFC or GMA Pinoy TV, or social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Different religious groups, like the Knights of the Columbus, assisted in the benefit concert held last Sunday with the participation of the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra (FASO) of Southern California and Maestro Bob Shroeder and other talented guest singers. The attendance at Saint Genevieve Church was overwhelming despite the short notice.

Other fundraising efforts for the typhoon victims include Passion...Revealed, which will be held on October 16 at the Viviana by 3MC, and Handog sa Bayan on October 11 at the Hollywood Celebrity Center (headed by Jet and Edith Montelibano). The outstanding support that Filipino-Americans are extending through donations or voluntary work is truly heartwarming. It only proves that there is a hero in every Filipino.

Our organization, the Marikina Association of
Southern California, is also having a series of meetings to strategize our own fundraising and donation efforts. I feel for my friends in the same industry as me back home -- stylists and salon owners who had so much losses.

I, too, started my career as a stylist back home in Marikina. I know na kahit isang, suklay, isang gunting, at isang blowdryer and a little make-up lang, if you have talent and determination, you can create something beautiful.
