FIRST OF ALL, allow me to congratulate the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra for the smashing success of their concert last Sunday at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. High praise goes to Asian Journal, the bold mover of this very complex undertaking.

I stood in applause with the rest of the Fil-Am community who watched the earth-shaking performances.

I met Gretchen many moons ago during her first few trips to the US. She was young, fresh and so very delightfully kikay. She is super makuwento and just interesting to be around. I remember it was around that time when she was trying to get over a break-up with a showbiz boyfriend. Time and time again, my good friend Ruffa Gutierrez has proven that you can’t put a good woman down. After a stormy couple of years during and following her very public break-up with ex-husband Yilmaz Bektas, she is now gliding more peacefully through life.

As someone close to Ruffa, I was witness to her personal struggles. I first met her when she was a 15-year-old girl with her mom Annabelle. Even then, I viewed her as a kindhearted and nice person.

WHENEVER MOTHER’S DAY comes along, I get very sentimental just remembering nanay. I lost her over five years ago. I still feel the void in my heart of not having her around anymore.

It’s true--life as you knew it is never the same once your mother is gone. That’s how I feel, especially during Mother’s Day.
