Aquino visits dying man to fulfill wish

MANILA  – Away from the eyes of the media, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III quietly dropped by the hospital room of a dying man to grant his wish to see him up close.

Surprising the cancer-stricken Danilo Alonso, Aquino with his cousin Rapa Lopa appeared at room 779 of the Makati Medical Center one Saturday afternoon without telling Alonso’s family that he was coming.

AFP chief on a ‘goodbye’ tour among troops

MANILA - Amid calls for an extension of his term until after the May elections, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Victor Ibrado has started visiting military camps around the country to bid the troops farewell.

“I’ve already visited several units, not only to remind them to be nonpartisan in the coming elections but also to say my goodbyes,” Ibrado told reporters on Sunday.

Guinness cites bat cave in Samal

DAVAO CITY  – The Guinness World Records has recognized the bat sanctuary in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) as the world's largest for any colony of Geoffrey's Rousette Fruit Bat (Rousetteus amplexicaudatus), a conservationists’ group said.

Conservationists here and abroad said this recognition highlighted efforts to save one of the country's most hated and misunderstood creatures.

P3.6M for Japanese-Filipino kids, moms

MANILA - The Japanese government has given a grant of $78,795 (about 3.6 million) to a non-government organization that would facilitate livelihood and capacity-building programs for Japanese-Filipino children and their Filipino mothers who were migrant workers to Japan before.

According to the Japanese embassy here, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Makoto Katsura and Development Action for Women Network (DAWN) executive director Carmelita Nuqui signed the grant contract for “The Project for Building Capacities of Women and their Japanese-Filipino Children” on February 5, 2010 at the embassy of Japan.

Prelate says Lacson sought his advice before leaving

MANILA — Archbishop-emeritus Oscar Cruz disclosed on Saturday that Sen. Panfilo Lacson went to see him “two or three days before” he left the country last month to evade arrest for the murders of publicist Salvador Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito nearly 10 years ago.

Cruz, a known anti-Arroyo critic, said he merely listened to the senator divulge his plan to leave the country, and that he did not give any advice.
