MANILA - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to hold dialogues with traders to "temper" the rise in bread prices, Malacañang said Thursday.
The Philippine Association of Bakers said it would raise the price of bread by P1 each, while the size of pan de sal, a breakfast staple of Filipinos, could be reduced further due to the high cost of flour.
"The President will work hard to keep bread available and affordable, especially to poor households. She instructed the DTI to negotiate and hold dialogues with flour millers and bakers to temper the price increase," Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said in a statement.
Arroyo also instructed the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to procure equipment to mass produce vegetable flour, which is cheaper than regular flour, Fajardo said.
