SC affirms Trillanes ban from Senate

MANILA - It’s final. Senator Antonio Trillanes cannot attend official functions and receive members of his staff in his detention cell in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig, the Supreme Court has ruled.

In its two-page resolution, the high court dismissed the bid by fellow opposition Senators Aquilino Pimentel Jr., Benigno Aquino III, Rodolfo Biazon, Panfilo Lacson, Loren Legarda, Ana Consuelo "Jamby" Madrigal and Manuel Roxas II to allow him to attend Senate sessions and perform his duties as senator.

USDA extends guarantees to RP

THE US DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE has provided an initial $500 million in credit export guarantees to eight Southeast Asian countries - including the Philippines - under the GSM 102 program.

In a statement, the USDA said the credit guarantee for 2009 would be made available to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Thailand, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

Unicef to send $.5m to Mindanao

MANILA - A United Nations children’s agency will spend $500,000 (P23.5 million) over the next three months to help displaced children in Mindanao as the fighting between government troops and secessionist rebels continues.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) said on Saturday the money would be spent to set up child-safe spaces in evacuation centers and ensure families’ access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

US Congress girds for second try on financial rescue

WASHINGTON (AP) - House members are getting another chance to vote on a financial bailout bill that has infuriated millions of voters after the Senate added tax cuts and other sweeteners and passed it handily.

Senators advanced the much-criticized measure in a 74-25 vote late Wednesday, sending it to the other side of the Capitol for a showdown vote expected Friday. The move was calculated to win over enough dissenting House members to get the bill through and reverse Monday's stunning defeat in the H ouse. Party leaders there planned to press rank-and-file members Thursday for the dozen converts they believe they need.
