Press secretary downed by New York pizza, ginger ale

MANILA - A slice of pizza and a glass of ginger ale that he took from a pizza joint were the culprits behind the three-day hospital stay in New York by Press Secretary Jesus Dureza.

Still confined at the New York Presbyterian hospital but feeling much better, Dureza sent word to the Manila press on Sunday that doctors had told him that his intense tummy aches were the result of a bad case of food poisoning.

Comelec eyes one-million overseas voters for 2010 polls

MANILA - The Commission on Elections targets to have at least one million overseas absentee voters for the 2010 national elections as registration for new absentee voters starts on December 1.

“The goal is to have one million (absentee voters),” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

Filipino WWII veterans seek equality from US

MANILA (AP) - Filipinos who fought alongside US soldiers during World War II said Wednesday they will accept whatever compensation benefits Washington offers but will still seek the same recognition and treatment given to American veterans.

The US House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the "Filipino Veterans Equity Act of 2008" that would make one-time payments of US$15,000 to Filipinos who are US citizens and US$9,000 to non-US Filipino veterans.

Arroyo advised to check inflation as ‘worst is yet to come’

MANILA - The chief executive officer of Citicorp, one of the firms hit by the US financial crisis, has advised President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to keep inflation in check as the global turmoil would see a shift to commodities from financial instruments, Malacañang said.

The President met Citicorp CEO Bill Rhodes at the Plaza Hotel New York on Monday, a day before she addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday morning (late Tuesday evening in Manila), according to a Palace statement.
