Japan helps rebuild houses for 100 Antique families

MANILA - Japan is funding the construction of core shelters for 100 families who lost their homes to typhoon “Frank” earlier this year, the Japanese embassy here said Tuesday.

In a press statement, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Makoto Katsura said the $79,343 (about P3.6 million) project is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects as part of Japan's commitment to provide projects that directly benefit grassroots development.

US rewards RP seamen who squealed on polluting employers

MANILA - The United States government on Tuesday rewarded 12 Filipino seamen a total of $900,000 (P41.5 million) for helping prosecute the owners and operators of two ships that illegally dumped sludge oil and contaminated waste water into the ocean.

In a press statement, the US embassy here said the rewards ranged from $25,000 to $175,000 per seaman, depending on the value or weight of their testimonies.

The names of the 12 seamen were withheld for privacy reasons.

RP sticking with US war on terror

MANILA - The Philippines and its allies in the fight against terrorism got more reasons to stick together in the face of the devastating truck bomb attack on Marriott Hotel in Pakistan, a Malacañang official said on Sunday.

At least 53 people were killed, including Czech Ambassador Ivo Zdarek, while more than 270 others -- one of them a Filipino woman -- were injured in the Saturday night attack, described as one of the deadliest terrorist strikes in Pakistan.

Bolante loses US asylum appeal

MANILA - The United States Court of Appeals, in an August 27 ruling, has denied the petition for asylum of former agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn Bolante, according to lawyer Harry Roque.

Bolante, who has been implicated in the P728 million fertilizer fund scam, fled the country while the scandal was being investigated by the Senate.

Nograles: No Lakas standard bearer yet

MANILA - The ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) has yet to decide on its choice of standard-bearer for the 2010 presidential elections, contrary to claims it is inclined to draft Senate President Manuel Villar.

"We are a party that adheres to democratic processes. We don't decide based on the say-so of one or two individual members," House Speaker and Lakas-CMD president Prospero Nograles said in a statement.
