MANILA - A red carpet welcome awaits the top United Nations official who is expected in Manila this month.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon is visiting the Philippines to keynote the 2nd Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) the country is hosting.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said Ban had confirmed his attendance at the 2nd GFMD, a migration forum expected to gather some 2,000 delegates from around the world.
The four-day event will be held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City from Oct. 27 to 30, with two days of meetings for civil society and another two days for government officials.
Foreign Undersecretary Esteban Conejos Jr., head of the Philippine delegation, said the forum would focus its discussions on migrant workers' protection and rights.
In anticipation of Ban's visit, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is preparing high-level honors for the UN chief.
"We are extending the highest honors for Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and we're putting our best foot forward to welcome the rest of the delegates and their spouses," said airport development and corporate affairs chief Tirso Serrano.
Serrano said the MIAA was coordinating with the DFA, the lead organizer, on security and reception preparations. Airport officials expect delegates to begin arriving two to three days before the event.
