MANILA - Japan is funding the construction of core shelters for 100 families who lost their homes to typhoon “Frank” earlier this year, the Japanese embassy here said Tuesday.
In a press statement, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Makoto Katsura said the $79,343 (about P3.6 million) project is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects as part of Japan's commitment to provide projects that directly benefit grassroots development.
Sixty-five families in San Remigio town and 35 in Sibalom who were displaced by typhoon Frank in June will benefit from the grant.
After extending his condolences to the victims, Katsura said: "This is a response to the rehabilitation needs of the typhoon victims, whose houses were swept away or destroyed by the flashfloods and had to stay longer in the evacuation centers because of lack of housing. It is hoped that the project will support them as they continue to rebuild their sense of security and confidence on their way to full recovery."The ambassador said his country has always assisted the Philippines in disaster rehabilitation, both immediate and long-term.
Earlier, as part of the immediate response to Panay island, Japan provided water tanks, sleeping pads, plastic sheets, and generators.
"I am confident that all the 100 core shelter units will be constructed as soon as possible, and will be properly maintained by communities for many years to come," Katsura said.
"I strongly hope that this project will further strengthen the partnership and friendship between Japan and the Philippines," he added.
