DAVAO CITY - A new Philippine eagle was hatched Sunday at the breeding facility of the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) in Malagos in Calinan district.
Dennis Salvador, PEF program director, said on Tuesday the eaglet weighed 137.5 grams.
The new eaglet, the 23rd from the center’s conservation breeding program, is the offspring of eagles Tsai and Princess Maasim.
Salvador said the birth of the new eaglet was another milestone in PEF following the birth of the first eaglet bred in captivity, Pagasa, in 1992 and the first release into the wild of a captive-bred eagle in 2004.
Salvador said the PEF is now looking for partners to support the new eaglet.
The PEF’s breeding program seeks to increase the number of Philippine Eagles, a highly endangered species.
At least 400 pairs remain in the wild, according to estimates from both government and private conservation groups.| < Prev | Next > |
