CEBU CITY, Philippines - A half-brother and a cousin of the 16-year-old scavenger who reportedly found $60,000 accidentally dumped at the Inayawan landfill turned over $21,500 to authorities on Friday.

Julie Compuesto, in his 20s and a half-brother of the scavenger, turned over $17,000 in $100 bills to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) while Victoria Candido, a cousin, turned over $3,500, also in $100 bills, to Inayawan barangay (village) captain Rustico Ignacio at the barangay hall past 4 p.m. Friday.

Compuesto told local journalists he did not know the whereabouts of his half-brother, who left out of fear after learning NBI agents were looking for him.

He said his half-brother might be hiding in Bogo where they came from.

Compuesto explained that when his brother opened the package at the landfill, other scavengers also picked the dollar bills that fell on the ground.

Candido said they also spent part of the money to buy 50 sacks of rice and bottles of beer, which they distributed to about 600 scavengers at the dumpsite.

Candido said she also gave dollar bills to their close relatives.

Candido said nothing was left to the 16-year-old because everything was given to Compuesto, being the elder brother.
