MANILA - Leaders of Lakas-Kampi-CMD on Monday held top level negotiations with officials of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) in a bid to forge a grand alliance between the No. 1 and No. 2 political parties.

A source said Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita and political affairs adviser Gabriel Claudio met with NPC bigwigs Frisco San Juan and Benjamin Dy Jr. in a last-ditch attempt to have Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard-bearer Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro team up with NPC vice presidential candidate Senator Loren Legarda for the 2010 polls.
Old ties

A source in Lakas-Kampi said they were banking on the two parties’ old ties, noting that a number of NPC members were pro-administration.

Also, the Lakas-Kampi source said, they were in a race with the Nacionalista Party (NP) for Legarda who is allegedly being vigorously wooed by Senator Manny Villar.

The NPC was supposed to field its own ticket until its presumptive presidential bet, Senator Francis Escudero, quit the party leaving Legarda without a partner.

Defections

Lakas-Kampi on Monday reported a massive defection of members of the NPC to its fold.

Lakas-Kampi executive director Rey Roquero said 130 NPC members based in Tarlac, led by Vice Governor Marcelino Aganon Jr. and provincial board members Pearl Pacada and Rommel David took their oath in front of Ermita at Clark Air Base on October 28.

NPC spokesperson and Valenzuela Representative Rex Gatchalian, for his part, said he estimated that 20 to 30 congressional candidates would join the NPC before the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy later this month.

Gatchalian said this proved that people were joining the NPC because they believed in the party.
