MANILA – Former president and democracy icon Corazon “Cory” Aquino is the most loved as a national leader or politician by Filipinos, Pulse Asia revealed in its latest survey.
About 35 percent of the 1,800 adult respondents surveyed nationwide from January 22-26 expressed their preference for the late leader who led a popular revolt that dismantled a 20-year dictatorship under Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.
Ironically, ranked a far second was Marcos with 15 percent. Former president Joseph Estrada is third, with 13 percent; former senator Benigno Aquino Jr., fourth, with eight percent; and former president Ramon Magsaysay, fifth, with seven percent.
Rounding the top 15 of the most-loved choices in the poll that has a ±2 margin of error are: Senator Manny Villar, five percent; President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the late Fernando Poe Jr., two percent; former president Diosdado Macapagal, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, former president Fidel Ramos, the late senator Raul Roco, national hero Jose Rizal, Senators Loren Legarda and Manuel Roxas, all with one percent.
Of the respondents who considered Mrs. Aquino as their most beloved national political leader, about half expressed a preference to vote for her son, Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III for president while one-third opted to vote for his rival Villar in the elections in May, said Pulse Asia.
For those who chose Estrada as their most beloved leader, 46 percent still saw him as their choice for president while 29 percent preferred Villar, and 19 percent for Aquino III, the survey said.
The survey said that among the presidential contenders, Villar appeared to enjoy the support of those who considered him their most loved leader or politician as 92 percent would vote for him as president, with only two or three percent preferring other candidates.
Those who love Brother Eddie Villanueva as a national leader said they would support Villanueva's bid, according to the survey.
