Germany pledges aid for conflict victims in Mindanao

MANILA - The Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday said Germany has committed a million euros (about P70 million) for humanitarian efforts to support victims of conflict in Mindanao.

The DFA, in a statement, quoted German ambassador Christian Ludwig Weber-Lortsch saying that his government announced on Oct. 21 that it would be making the donation to the International Committee of the Red Cross in the Philippines.

No contact with priest’s kidnappers yet, says official

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Despite the government’s failure to establish contact with the kidnappers of Irish priest Michael Sinnott, the trust of his colleagues in the authorities has not waned, a provincial official said Thursday.

Quoting a letter from the Rev. Patrick O’Donoghue, the regional director of the Missionary Society of St. Columban, Allan Molde, spokesperson of the Zamboanga del Sur crisis management committee, said the religious group continued to have full trust in the actions of the government.

65th anniversary of Leyte Landings celebrated

PALO, Leyte - Rain marred the commemoration of the 65th Leyte Gulf Landings held here on Tuesday but this did not dampen the spirit of the celebrators who included President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and 10 of the oldest living World War II veterans in Eastern Visayas.

Some of the activities lined up pushed through when the sun was still up on Tuesday morning such as the flag raising and the wreath laying ceremonies with the President leading foreign dignitaries from Canada, Australia, Japan and the United States.

Iloilo medical teams to aid in ‘Ondoy’ relief efforts

ILOILO CITY - The Iloilo provincial government will send a team of doctors and nurses to Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces to help provide free medical services to victims of Tropical Storm “Ondoy,” a government official here said.

Iloilo provincial administrator Manuel Mejorada on Wednesday said Gov. Niel Tupas has tasked the provincial health office to organize the medical mission to provide assistance to the overworked government and private doctors now attending to the victims of flood caused by "Ondoy."

Vatican ‘very concerned’ about Sinnott’s kidnap

PAGADIAN CITY -  One week after the abduction of the ailing Irish missionary priest Michael Sinnott, people close to him have become even more concerned about his health, although authorities are still hopeful they would be able to “establish contact” with the kidnappers in due time.

A local cleric said that “the Vatican has been very concerned about the kidnapping.”
