MassKara: Celebration of 30 years of smiles

BACOLOD CITY - Bacolod City’s MassKara Festival is celebrating 30 years of smiles this month, this time with a dramatic fusion of public art and street entertainment.

“We are going to unveil a major work of art at the Bacolod public plaza in the evening of October 14 that is our vision of what the MassKara street dancing should evolve into,” says festival director Eli Tajanlangit.

Aquino, Roxas get pop star welcome in Negros

BACOLOD CITY - Senators Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and Manuel "Mar" Roxas II, who have announced their candidacies for president and vice president under the Liberal Party in next year’s elections, got a pop star welcome from a sea of yellow crowds in three cities in Negros Occidental on Thursday.

People shouting "Noy-Mar Na!" surged forward to touch the two, get their autographs and have their pictures taken as the duo went on stage in Talisay, Bacolod and Bago cities.

Little-known Laguna town cries for help

LOS BAÑOS, Laguna - Most of the lakeshore towns in Laguna were flooded due to the heavy rains brought by storm Ondoy. But unknown to many, the rural town of Sta. Maria, at the northernmost part of Laguna, was also badly hit.

In a text message Wednesday, Sta. Maria Mayor Josie Cuento said this was the first time that flooding happened in their place.

Ilonggos launch cause for sainthood of Filipino nun

ILOILO CITY – Fireworks exploded and church bells rang as around 2,500 Ilonggos on Wednesday welcomed the first step in the long and tedious process for the canonization of Mother Rosario Arroyo, whom they hoped would be the country's first woman and Ilonggo saint.

The faithful, along with members of religious organizations, flocked to the St. Anne Church in Molo District, Iloilo City, to attend the formal opening of the diocesan process for the canonization of Mother Rosario Arroyo de la Visitacion.

San Roque dam breaches normal level

SAN MANUEL, Pangasinan  -  For the first time since its operations began in 2003, the water level at the San Roque multipurpose dam here on Monday and Tuesday breached its normal high water level of 280 meters above sea level (MASL).

But dam officials said there was no cause for alarm because the dam's reservoir is large enough to hold excess water.
