Waters in Bulacan dams breach maximum levels

CITY OF MALOLOS - Waters in two dams in Bulacan breached its maximum levels on Saturday following heavy rains accompanying tropical storm Ondoy, reports from the provincial disaster coordinating council (PDCC) showed.

PDCC reports said the water level at the Angat Dam in Norzagaray town reached 211.14 meters on Saturday, breaching its spilling level of 210 meters.

Pacquiao opposes coal-fired power plant

GENERAL SANTOS CITY - Finally, boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has made a stand against the establishment of a 200-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Sarangani Province.

Boxing’s pound-for-pound king aired his personal stand on the controversial project in his column titled “Kumbinasyon” dated Sept. 24 and published in PhilBoxing.com.

Rift won’t stop Peñafrancia parade

NAGA CITY - As they have always done for the past 15 years, tens of thousands of students marched through Panganiban Avenue and over Lt. Delfin C. Rosales Bridge in Naga City on Friday in what was billed as Bicol’s longest military parade, in time for the Feast of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia.

And as in previous walks, they hurdled humps, laid this time by the Bicol Association of Catholic Schools (BACS) and several Church leaders who questioned the activity’s relevance to the celebration in honor of the region’s patroness.

US allots $73 M for ‘green plan’ for Mindanao

KORONADAL CITY – The United States government has allotted $73 million for what it has termed as a "green plan" for the Southern Philippines.

US Ambassador Kristie Kenney said that under the plan, Washington would support the development and implementation of energy and environment projects that in one way or another would also help address the peace-and-order problem in Mindanao.

Students tapped to watch pols’ ad spending

BAGUIO CITY — University students in the Cordillera Administrative Region have been tapped to document how much profits national and local news media earned from government infomercials, to help a nonpolitical movement unmask interest groups influencing Philippine politics today.

They are being deputized as “neutral monitors” of campaign financing, and their findings could “help restore public faith in the electoral system,” said Prof. Teofilo Macabiog, Cordillera convenor of the Association of Schools of Public Administration in the Philippines Inc.
