Earthquake strikes near Mindanao

COTABATO CITY - A magnitude 6.6 quake struck at the ocean near the southern Philippines Sunday night, the United States Geological Survey reported.

The quake was recorded at 6:58 p.m., the epicenter was traced 57 miles southwest of this city.

No casualty or damage to infrastructure was reported so far. No tsunami alert was issued

The Philippines sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

The worst earthquake in the country happened on August 16, 1976 after a tsunami caused by a quake killed between 5,000 and 8,000 people in the Moro Gulf region in southern Philippines.
