Baguio experiencing ‘Christmas weather’

BAGUIO CITY - After the typhoons, it's now time for residents and tourists to enjoy Baguio's "Christmas weather" as the temperature drops.

"Bring out your sweaters and bonnets because this kind of weather makes you shiver and makes you feel like your head will burst," said Leticia Dispo, weather specialist of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) here.

Residents started experiencing the temperature drop last month as the city and other provinces in the Cordillera were battered by typhoons, she said.

On Oct. 27, Baguio residents woke up to a temperature of 12.4 degrees Celsius, the coldest day of the month. On Oct. 9, when Typhoon "Pepeng" was battering Northern Luzon, the city's temperature was 12.8 degrees Celsius.

Dispo said winds coming from China are contributing to the cold weather.

Pagasa records showed that from Oct. 21-25, the average minimum temperature in Baguio and Benguet was between 14 and 14.8 degrees Celsius.

Dispo said tourists seeking to experience the Baguio cold may come in January when the temperature is expected to drop to 9 degrees Celsius or lower.

While enjoying the cold, she said people should also brace for the dry spell when the country experiences El Niño early next year.

Dispo said Typhoon "Santi," which was accompanied by strong winds but little rain, is one of the early manifestations of El Niño.

Danny Galate, also a Pagasa weather specialist, said abnormal volumes of rain will lessen the impact of the dry spell.
